威爾在法庭上不請律師，自己援引美國憲法為自己辯護，把傷人、盜竊、拒捕這些舊案一件件撤掉；可法官翻了翻他的 rap sheet（案底），只說一句：別的法官也許會在意，可你打了警察，還是得進去。另一邊，蘭博教授為找出解題的天才，先到樓宇管理處打聽那個打工學生的名字，又順著 parole officer（假釋官）找到威爾家門口，自報家門。威爾則打電話約斯凱拉見面，怕太冒失，先鋪墊一句 this is just a shot in the dark（這純屬瞎猜），再猜她是不是法學預科。想學法庭上義正詞嚴的說法、又想知道地道的自嘲怎麼開口，這些表達都能用上。

說 self-defense，法律和日常都能用。戲裡威爾援引的法條，就是被告可以對政府人員主張 self-defense，也就是正當防衛。
不行。它字面是「在黑暗裡打一槍」，指沒把握的嘗試、瞎猜。戲裡威爾猜斯凱拉的專業前，先說自己這句是 a shot in the dark，等於先給自己留後路。
thrown out 是被撤銷、被駁回。案底上寫案子 all overturned，就是威爾靠自辯把這些指控全推翻了，可這次他打了警察，沒法再撤。
可以說 show up。戲裡樓宇管理處的人說 Willy didn't show up for work today，就是「威利今天沒來上班、沒露面」，很口語。
