Linda Recalls the Painting Party, Explained:the date that didn't end

A long-shot interview pays off when a witness finally names the strange man from a party years ago — "It was Leigh." The detective still won't hear it: "That's just one name in a file that contains hundreds," he says, and declares the investigation closed.

あらすじ

Graysmith tracks down Darlene's sister Linda and asks about the painting party. She remembers a suited man who sat alone all night and scared Darlene, and after pressure she finally recalls his name: Leigh. The sergeant rejects it as one name among hundreds and says the case is closed.

「Linda Recalls the Painting Party」を読み解く

What's really going on

The scene is about how a real lead gets buried. Linda's memory is ordinary and human — a suit, a silent man, a name that surfaces only after she is pressed — but it points straight at the man Graysmith suspects. The system's answer is institutional: "That's just one name in a file that contains hundreds," and "our investigation into this subject is over." Both statements are true and both are useless, since a file with hundreds of names still has to be read. The final phone call reframes the cost, with the wife calling their marriage "the date that didn't end," a line that turns one man's obsession into the slow draining of a family.

Theme

JusticeA single name in a huge file could crack the case, but the police declare the investigation over.
Family conflictGraysmith's obsession is called a date that never ended, one that keeps draining his family.

このチャプターで学べること

  • The painting party was beer and brushes; one man sat all night in a suit.
  • Darlene told her to stay away; a couple of weeks later Darlene was dead.
  • The name was short, like Stan—not Rick; under pressure she says Leigh.
  • He begs for one file for one second; they tell him 8:00 a.m., when they open.

発音のポイント

  • by himself — liaison
  • kind of busy — weak form
  • book coming — liaison
  • ate something — liaison
Robert, it was just the date that didn't end.

A bitter image for their marriage: a date that kept going long past the point it should have stopped.

No. That's just one name in a file that contains hundreds.

The sergeant dismissing the lead as statistically worthless, even though it points at the suspect.

Our investigation into this subject is over.

A formal declaration that closes the door on the new lead, whatever its value.

She once told me he'd killed somebody.

Linda's memory that Darlene confided the strange man had taken a life, possibly while in the service.

このシーンについての質問

Why does the witness finally say 'Leigh'?

Graysmith keeps pressing her to think hard, and under that pressure she recalls the short nickname-like name that frightened Darlene at the party.

Why do the police dismiss the name?

They say it is only one name among hundreds in the file and that the investigation is closed, so they see no reason to act on it.

What did Darlene tell her sister about the man?

She warned Linda to stay away from him and once said he had killed somebody, possibly during his time in the service.

What does Graysmith's wife mean by 'the date that didn't end'?

She means their marriage feels like one long, unending date, still dragging on because of his obsession with the case, not because of love.
