Graysmith Follows the Birthday Clue, Explained:more than just a coincidence

A reporter refuses to accept a string of odd calls as chance: "It's got to be more than just a coincidence, right?" Chasing the idea that the killer knew one victim, he finds a secretary who remembers a birthday phone call, and a skeptical official who tells him he is looking in the wrong place.

あらすじ

Graysmith keeps pulling at the Darlene Ferrin case, convinced the killer knew her. He locates Melvin Belli's secretary, who recalls a caller who said he had to kill because it was his birthday. When Graysmith takes the detail to the authorities, they call the caller a liar and tell him to stick to the evidence.

「Graysmith Follows the Birthday Clue」を読み解く

What's really going on

The scene is about how a theory becomes an obsession. Graysmith starts from a hunch — someone phoned a victim's whole family, so "it's got to be more than just a coincidence" — and turns it into a direction for the whole investigation. The secretary's memory of a birthday call is the kind of detail that feels like a key, and the officials' refusal to chase it is the kind of resistance that keeps him going. Their line, "You're looking in the wrong place," is both advice and dismissal, and the film lets you feel why he ignores it. The scene also shows the cost at home, where even a newspaper mention of his book worries his wife.

Theme

JusticeGraysmith chases a small detail because the system has stopped pursuing the case.
DutyA reporter takes on the search the police have given up, at growing cost to his own life.

このチャプターで学べること

  • Prank calls hit the whole family ninety minutes after the shooting—too neat for coincidence.
  • Either Zodiac recognized Darlene, or she was shot on purpose.
  • While Belli was away at Christmas, the caller said today was his birthday and he had to kill.
  • He left on the 18th; the letter is the 20th; nobody died on December 18th.

発音のポイント

  • hangs up — liaison
  • get a hold of — weak form
  • Stick to the evidence — flap
It's got to be more than just a coincidence, right?

Graysmith's hunch stated as a challenge: too many strange calls point somewhere real for this to be chance.

He's a liar, Mr. Graysmith.

The official's flat dismissal of the Zodiac's phone claims, refusing to treat a habitual liar's words as evidence.

You're looking in the wrong place.

Advice and a put-down at once: chase handwriting and fingerprints, not a story about who knew whom.

Can I give you a piece of advice?

A soft lead-in that signals the sharp correction coming next, the way people warn you before saying no.

このシーンについての質問

Why does Graysmith think the killer knew Darlene Ferrin?

He argues no one would prank call a victim's whole family, so the calls suggest a personal link rather than random targeting.

What does Belli's secretary reveal?

She remembers the Zodiac phoning while Belli was away and saying he had to kill because it was his birthday, a detail Graysmith wants to verify.

Why do the officials dismiss the birthday clue?

They have checked the caller's claims before and found the suspects' birthdays did not match, so they treat the phone call as a lie.

Why does Graysmith keep investigating anyway?

The case has become personal, and each wall he hits only makes him more certain that the answer is somewhere the police refuse to look.
