Zodiac Attacks the Couple at the Lake, Explained:get any ideas

The letter promises a paradise built on slaves, and the scene cuts straight to that idea made real: a man with a gun takes a couple's money, keys and freedom. One victim cooperates completely — “You're welcome to everything I have” — while the other is warned not to get any ideas.

あらすじ

A letter from the killer claims that when he dies he will be reborn in paradise and the people he has killed will become his slaves. The film then shows that belief in action: at Lake Berryessa, a man with a gun orders a young couple to hand over their money and car keys, ties them up, and talks about having killed before.

「Zodiac Attacks the Couple at the Lake」を読み解く

What's really going on

The letter is grandiose and the picnic is mundane, and the scene's power comes from putting them side by side. The killer's fantasy of owning souls is answered, minutes later, by a man who takes a wallet and a car and calls it enough. One victim keeps talking to stay alive — “You're welcome to everything I have” — turning total surrender into a strategy. The scene never lets the audience forget how ordinary the setting is: a public park, a blanket, a couple who assumed the man behind the tree was only relieving himself. That gap between a normal afternoon and what follows is the whole point.

Theme

SurvivalA victim talks and complies to stay alive, turning politeness and total surrender into a way to buy time.
PowerA gun reverses a lazy afternoon: the couple's ordinary control over their own day is gone in seconds.

"And all that I have killed will become my slaves.

The killer's motive stated outright: he believes murder earns him servants in the next life, which is why he keeps collecting victims.

Well, we're very good-looking.

A light, flirty joke meant to dismiss the fear that someone is watching them. It's the last ordinary line before the attack.

You're welcome to everything I have.

Complete surrender offered politely: the speaker invites the gunman to take everything, hoping compliance will be rewarded with life.

I'm not afraid to kill again.

A flat threat meant to cut off any resistance: the gunman says that killing again would cost him nothing.

このシーンについての質問

Why does the killer say he will collect slaves?

He believes that when he dies he will be reborn in paradise, and that everyone he has killed will serve him there. The letter spells out the motive behind the murders: killing is described as gathering slaves for his afterlife.

Why do the victims cooperate so completely?

A gun is pointed at them and escape looks impossible, so one of them keeps talking and offers everything — money, keys, even a check — trying to keep the attacker calm and buy time.

Is the man at the lake the Zodiac killer?

The film presents him as the Zodiac: the scene matches a real attack near Lake Berryessa, where a man carried out a stabbing and later claimed it in a letter.

What does 'take a leak' mean?

It's a slang way to say go to the bathroom, used casually. In the scene it makes the stranger behind the tree seem harmless, which is exactly why the moment lands as a shock later.
