Mike Volunteers as Leo's Guardian, Explained:spread too thin
A judge is ready to hand an elderly man's care to the state and send him to a facility. Then his lawyer stands up with an offer: "I would be willing to serve as Mr. Poplar's guardian." It sounds generous, but the real fight is about whether the old man gets to stay in his own home.

In court, an elderly man has been declared unable to manage his own affairs, and the only family anyone can find is a daughter who disappeared decades ago. What's really going on
This scene looks like a bureaucratic formality, but it's really a quiet power grab — and it plays out in polite, formal language. The state's lawyer argues that proximity and a short acquaintance don't qualify anyone: "Proximity hardly qualifies him as a guardian." He isn't wrong on paper. But then the offer comes: "I would be willing to serve as Mr. Poplar's guardian." What makes it land is the personal stake underneath — the lawyer says he lives in the same town and wants the old man to stay in his own home, not be shipped to a facility. The judge's dry reply, "Stop saying, 'Really.' It's annoying," cuts through the tension and reminds us this is still an ordinary, small-town courtroom. The win looks like generosity; in the film, it comes with a motive we'll learn soon enough.

...I am in a better position to execute exactly what my client wants. His argument: as the man's own lawyer, he's best placed to carry out what the client actually wants.
Well, that hardly qualifies him as a guardian. The opposing lawyer's objection — being nearby or knowing the man briefly doesn't make someone fit to be his guardian.
We're spread too thin to give that kind of individual attention. The state's excuse for not helping: they lack the staff to give one old man close, personal care.
Judge, I feel I would be a better candidate than the state in this particular case.He formally puts himself forward as a better choice to be guardian than the government.
I would be willing to serve as Mr. Poplar's guardian.A polite, formal offer to accept the role and its responsibilities.
Really? Yes. Stop saying, "Really." It's annoying. After the same surprised word is repeated, the speaker snaps at the habit — a dry, human beat in a stiff courtroom.
このシーンについての質問
Why does Mike want to be Leo's guardian?
He says he lives in the same town and can make sure Leo gets what he wants — to stay at home. Later events reveal there's also a financial motive behind the offer.
Why doesn't the state want Mike to be the guardian?
The opposing lawyer argues that living nearby or knowing Leo for only a few weeks doesn't qualify him, and that the public guardian's office operates by the book.
What does "spread too thin" mean here?
It means the office doesn't have enough staff or resources to give one person close attention — their reason for not letting Leo stay at home with a personal guardian.
Who is supposed to be Leo's family?
His daughter is the only living relative, but she hasn't been seen in over twenty years and two certified letters to her came back unclaimed.
Does Leo get to stay in his home?
The scene ends with Mike appointed as his guardian, which is presented as a win for keeping Leo at home — though the film keeps complicating that "win" afterward.
