Tituba Confesses and Names Names, explained

What happens

Reverend Hale questions Tituba, the Parris family's slave from Barbados. He calls her God's instrument and urges her to turn from the Devil and face God. When she finally confesses, she names Sarah Good and Goody Osburn, and Abigail and Betty repeat the charge, filling the room with names.

What's really going on

The interrogation is built to produce a confession, and every line from Hale is pressure dressed as comfort. He tells Tituba she is "God's instrument put in our hands to discover the Devil's agents among us," then promises protection, then shows her the suffering child — "How can you bear to see this child suffering?" Her own account of the Devil is vivid and human: he promised her freedom, a pretty dress, and a flight back to Barbados, and she says she answered, "You lie, Devil, you lie!" But once Hale reframes confession as salvation rather than sin, she yields, and what she yields is names. Her first line, "I saw Sarah Good with the Devil!" is not evidence she gathered; it is the shape the room wanted, and the moment it is spoken the other girls begin chanting the same formula. The scene shows how an accusation becomes a script: one voice says it, and then the whole room can say it too.

Key lines & what they mean

“You are God's instrument put in our hands to discover the Devil's agents among us.”
Hale tells Tituba she is the tool God has given them, making her confession sound like a holy task rather than a betrayal.
“And I say, "You lie, Devil, you lie!"”
Tituba's answer to the Devil's promises, the one moment she stands up to him before she breaks.
“I saw Sarah Good with the Devil!”
The first name she gives; once spoken, it becomes the charge the other girls repeat.
“and he bid me rise out of my bed and cut your throat!”
Her account of the Devil ordering her to kill Parris, the most personal and alarming detail she confesses.

Theme

  • Faith — Hale turns Tituba's fear into a religious duty, and confession becomes the way to be saved.
  • Power — The questioning extracts names, and the first charge lets the other girls repeat it as proof.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
Why does Tituba confess to witchcraft?

Hale offers her a way out: confess, turn to God, and she will be protected. Frightened and promised her freedom, she says what the room wants to hear, admitting she saw the Devil and signed his book.

Who does Tituba name first?

She names Sarah Good, then Goody Osburn. Ann Putnam seizes on Osburn at once, saying Osburn was midwife to her three times and her babies shriveled in her hands.

What does 'Goody' mean in this scene?

It is short for Goodwife, an old title for a married woman of the town, like Mistress or Mrs. That is why the accused women are called Goody Good, Goody Osburn, and Goody Howe.

Why does Ann Putnam believe Goody Osburn killed her babies?

Osburn delivered three of Ann's children, and Ann says every one of them shriveled in her hands. When Tituba names Osburn, Ann treats it as the answer she had been waiting for.

Why do the other girls start naming names?

Once Tituba's confession is accepted, the naming becomes a pattern anyone can copy. Abigail and Betty take up the same line, and the accusations multiply.
