Capítulo 10 de 19 · 5'00"
With Aziz arrested, his friends scramble to find a defence counsel. Fielding argues they need "someone from a distance, someone who cannot be intimidated," while Godbole, asked to help, answers only that "nothing you do will change the outcome."
Choosing a Defence Lawyer
After the Marabar disaster, Aziz has been arrested. Fielding and Aziz's friends meet to choose a defence lawyer, settling on Amritrao, the anti-British Calcutta barrister. Meanwhile Mrs. Moore insists Aziz is innocent while Ronny tells her the case must now go to a magistrate. Fielding then visits Godbole to ask for help, and finds him calmly detached, speaking of destiny and karma.
Two kinds of certainty collide here. The English law is already moving — 'The machinery has started' — and Fielding knows the machine will treat Aziz's race as evidence; he wants a lawyer who cannot be leaned on. Mrs. Moore is certain of the opposite thing, that Aziz is innocent because 'it's not the sort of thing he would do,' and her certainty is intuition, not proof. Godbole offers a third position that unnerves Fielding: 'we are all part of a pattern we cannot perceive.' It is not indifference exactly — Godbole says he does care — but a belief that human effort is beside the point. Fielding's whole ethic, that the right action matters, is quietly dismantled by a man who answers a request for help with 'nothing you do will change the outcome.'

Completely. She says 'it's not the sort of thing he would do,' and insists Aziz is certainly innocent even when Ronny warns her she cannot know that.
He sees the outcome as fixed by destiny or karma, so caring or acting changes nothing. He tells Fielding they are all part of a pattern they cannot perceive.
It means the colonial legal process has already been set in motion and will grind on to its conclusion. Ronny says it as a fact, and Fielding repeats it bitterly about Adela.
He wants advice on a name for the school he plans to run back home — the Richard Fielding High School, or failing that, King Emperor George V. It shows how far his mind is from the trial.
