Dinner at Trent's Beach House, explained

What happens

Duncan meets Peter, the son of Trent's friends, and is pushed to spend the summer with him. Later, at a dinner party, he watches the adults drink and dance while they mishear a lyric as 'Carry a laser' and joke about who is grinding on whom. Duncan sits through it, visibly out of place.

What's really going on

The chapter is a study in a boy being out of place. Duncan is passed from one adult arrangement to another, introduced as a son and then ignored while the grown-ups perform. The comedy hides a small cruelty: the lines about Peter's action figures, about his eye, about who is grinding on whom, all come at the expense of the people least able to fight back. "I told you. Your eye makes people uncomfortable" is the chapter's coldest line, and it comes from his own mother. The song nonsense is funny, but the film keeps the discomfort in view. Duncan's defence is silence, and the camera notices it.

Key lines & what they mean

“Just stare at the bridge of his nose. That's what I do.”
A trick for getting through an awkward conversation, passed on as practical advice.
“They're action figures! And they're classics!”
Peter's indignant correction, and a small portrait of a kid defending his own world.
“Don't stand us up. We know where you live!”
A joke that lands as a mild threat, and the awkwardness of forced friendship.
“I told you. Your eye makes people uncomfortable.”
The chapter's coldest line, said to a child by his own mother.
“Why would anybody write a song called, "Carry A Laser?"”
The lyric debate that becomes the party's biggest topic, and the scene's comedy.
“Chief, I'm Kip. I'm the one who's not grinding on you right now.”
A greeting delivered as a joke about the dancing, and a sample of the adults' humour.

Theme

  • Family conflict — Duncan is handed between adults and mocked, including by his own mother, at a dinner party he cannot escape.
  • Loneliness — Surrounded by adults performing, Duncan is the only person sitting still and saying almost nothing.

Questions, then the lines
Why is Duncan made to spend time with Peter?

Both boys are on the same holiday and about the same age, so the mothers arrange it. Duncan is reluctant and says he needs to check with his mom.

What does 'grinding on' mean?

It means pressing and moving your body against someone, usually on a dance floor. Kip uses it to joke that he is the one not doing it.

Why does Pam say Duncan's eye makes people uncomfortable?

She offers it as a reason he should cover it up, but it comes out as a casual criticism of her own son in front of the other adults.

How does Duncan behave during the dinner?

He mostly stays silent and watches. When Trent asks about a dent in the car roof, he answers briefly and lets Pam smooth it over.

Why do the adults keep joking about 'Carry a laser'?

They mishear the lyric in the song playing at the party and find it so absurd that they keep repeating it, which becomes the table's running joke.
