A Graduate Rants About Posers, Explained

SLC Punk · 1998

Chapter 3 of 10 · 3'02"

A college graduate mocks Utah kids who dress as punks and chant a British slogan. "You don't live your life by lyrics" draws the line: a song is not a life. Under the joke sits anger that Salt Lake fawns over English bands while those bands look down on Americans.

A Graduate Rants About Posers, explained

What happens

A graduate says college is over and the system held. Bob and the others had sworn to do nothing and waste their educated minds. In Utah, punks have grown, and so have posers who dress the part and chant "Anarchy in the U.K." The question is what good that is in America, and the answer given is that you do not live your life by lyrics.

What's really going on

The rant is about belonging, not album reviews. People who looked like punks "did it for fashion," then repeated "Anarchy in the U.K.," a Sex Pistols line from England. Later the line is "You don't live your life by lyrics." A slogan from another country is no use "to those of us in Utah." England gets called nothing more than a big American state. The sore point comes next: Salt Lake fawns over English bands, and "All we were to them was a bunch of hicks." The label, the boots, and the rodeo are all refused. "By definition, I'm not a redneck." "Oh, the sun never sets on the British empire" is flipped into "Well, the sun never sets on my asshole." When the talk turns to who started punk, the Sex Pistols or the Ramones, the contest is dropped: "I don't know who started it, and I don't give a fuck." The closing claim is doing it harder, faster, and with more love.

Key lines & what they mean

“You don't live your life by lyrics.”
The lines just before call "Anarchy in the U.K." useless in Utah. This one says a British punk lyric cannot be the rule for a life there.
“We were gonna waste our educated minds. We had no other way of fighting.”
The system is strong and they are few, so the oath is to do nothing. Wasting those educated minds is called the only fight left.
“All we were to them was a bunch of hicks.”
This is the reason for the anger: after Salt Lake fawns over English bands, those bands still see Americans as hicks.
“By definition, I'm not a redneck, and I ain't a fuckin' hick.”
He refuses both labels: no cowboy boots, he hates the rodeo, horses smell bad, and he does not sleep with his own bloodline.
“Well, the sun never sets on my asshole!”
The line just before boasts that the sun never sets on the British empire. This one sticks the same boast on an asshole and knocks the pride down.
“I don't know who started it, and I don't give a fuck.”
The argument was whether the Sex Pistols or the Ramones started punk. The question is refused, and the credit stays on doing it harder, faster, and with more love.

Theme

  • Identity — Real resistance is split from fashion, the hick label is refused, and belonging sits in Utah rather than in an English lyric.
  • Satire — Fake accents and English band worship are mocked, and the sun never sets is moved from the empire onto a crude joke.

Questions, then the lines
Who are the trendy fucks?

The line is "that's all you ever heard from these trendy fucks." It points at people whose talk is English bands, with the sample "Did you hear the new Smiths album? It's fuckin' terrif."

Why swear to waste an education?

The system is called strong, and there just were not enough of them. Bob and the rest had made an oath to do absolutely nothing. They were going to waste their educated minds, with no other way of fighting.

Why the anger about English bands?

Salt Lake fawns over them, but the complaint is that those English bands only insult Americans, and "All we were to them was a bunch of hicks."

Why follow the empire slogan with the next sentence?

The sentence before is "Oh, the sun never sets on the British empire." The next one keeps that boast and sticks it on "my asshole."
