Not a Ruined Woman, Explained: ruined woman

What starts as talk about sex and a pregnancy turns into an argument over whose problem it is. "And just because I'm pregnant, I'm not some ruined woman and all romance goes out the door" is the line that refuses the label, and what follows asks for a real try instead of a joke.

What happens

The talk moves from whether to have sex into a pregnancy that someone tries to treat lightly. The reply is blunt: it is not one person's situation, and being pregnant does not make anyone a ruined woman. They land on getting to know each other, not rushing, with seven months before the baby comes, and on a plea not to be left alone with it.

Not a Ruined Woman, explained

What's really going on

Someone tries to get a little fun out of the pregnancy. The answer will not let that stand. "Okay, first of all, it's not my situation. It's our situation" moves the weight onto both people. Another line refuses a worse label: "And just because I'm pregnant, I'm not some ruined woman and all romance goes out the door." Romance is not cancelled, and the pregnant person is not written off. "A little, so far" keeps the liking cautious. Seven months remain, and they do not have to rush. "We should really just try to get to know each other and give this a real shot" is the modest version of that refusal. Only then does a second date question produce a crude plan, a plea to stop talking like that, and two nervous replies. The last note is fear of being left alone: "I couldn't take it. I can't raise this baby alone."

Theme

RomancePregnancy is treated as a reason romance would vanish, and the reply insists it does not have to.
ParenthoodThey have seven months, talk about not rushing, and someone says they cannot raise the baby alone.

Listen for

  • don't have to — Keep have light and put the weight on the later word.
  • a little fun — Let the t in little flick by without stopping the mouth.
  • not some ruined — Stress not and ruined, and let pregnant stay light.
  • was gonna get — Don't pause inside gonna; keep that stretch in one piece.
And just because I'm pregnant, I'm not some ruined woman and all romance goes out the door.

Being pregnant is not a verdict that the speaker is damaged and that romance is finished.

Okay, first of all, it's not my situation. It's our situation.

A correction: the pregnancy does not belong to only one of them.

We should really just try to get to know each other and give this a real shot.

With months still left, they propose learning who the other is and trying the relationship for real.

For the sake of getting to know one another, can you not talk like that?

A request to drop the crude talk so the two of them can actually get to know each other.

I couldn't take it. I can't raise this baby alone.

The speaker cannot stand the idea of raising the baby without the other person.

Just so you know, I'm the guy girls fuck over.

The speaker says he is the one women usually hurt, and that he is not the one who does the hurting.

Questions about this scene

Why is "your situation" corrected?

The next claim is "It's not my situation. It's our situation." Right after that, someone answers "I know, of course, I know that." The pregnancy is being treated as shared, not as one person's problem.

What is the ruined-woman line refusing?

It refuses the idea that pregnancy cancels romance. The speaker says that just because they are pregnant, they are not a ruined woman and romance does not go out the door. "I'm sorry" follows.

Do they agree to rush into being a couple?

No. Liking is only "A little, so far." The baby is seven months away, they say "We don't have to rush it," and the plan is to get to know each other and "give this a real shot," for the baby.

What are they afraid of at the end?

Two fears sit next to each other. "I couldn't take it. I can't raise this baby alone." And, just before that, "I'm the guy girls fuck over," followed by "So you don't fuck me over." The lines state both fears. They do not say one person holds both.
