The Dawn Wall · 2017 — 第 13 / 24 章 · 2'27" · B2

Years of Grinding on the Wall, Explained:take a toll

The route is described through climbing grades, and the numbers are brutal: the Dawn Wall holds more hard pitches than every other route on El Capitan put together. "This is a pipe dream, man," someone says, yet the pair keep returning. Years pass in a cycle of climb, fall, rest and try again, and the wall slowly wears them down.

あらすじ

Above the Dyno the granite is so polished that Tommy has to invent new ways of using his thumbs, because his index finger is gone. The film explains climbing grades to show how extreme the route is, then jumps into the years of work: months on the wall each spring and autumn, falls, sprained ankles and broken ribs.

「Years of Grinding on the Wall」を読み解く

What's really going on

The grading lesson is really a way of measuring obsession. A normal hard climb is already remarkable; the Dawn Wall strings hard pitches together from bottom to top, which is why people call it a pipe dream. Kevin is honest about his own doubt — "I always thought it was futile in terms of doing the whole thing" — and the film does not pretend the doubt disappears. Instead it shows the cost: "Living on the Wall takes a huge toll." Feet worn raw, ribs dislocated, a partner who sometimes thinks Tommy is crazy. Staying is not a single heroic decision but thousands of small returns, every spring and every autumn, for years.

Theme

AmbitionThe climbers spend years repeating the same wall, measuring progress in tiny gains rather than days.
CourageKept going through injury and doubt, the pair treat each fall and return as part of the job.

このチャプターで学べること

  • Climbing grades turn pain into a number.
  • A missing finger forces Tommy to invent new moves.
  • Injury is treated as part of the routine, not an ending.
  • Doubt is voiced plainly, then overruled by showing up.

発音のポイント

  • that is — In speech that is often blurs into that's.
  • than every other — Link than every other into one run in fast speech.
The Dawn Wall has more hard pitches than every other route on El Cap combined.

The route's difficulty stated as a comparison: it packs more hard sections than the rest of El Cap put together.

I always thought it was futile in terms of doing the whole thing.

Kevin admits he long believed finishing the entire route was pointless, not just hard.

This is a pipe dream, man. Come on.

The verdict of the doubters, said to someone who refuses to hear it.

Living on the Wall takes a huge toll.

The cost of the project measured in the body, not the calendar.

This is what El Cap does to your feet.

A plain caption over damaged skin, letting the image make the point.

There were times I thought he was totally crazy.

Kevin's honest version of partnership: admiration and disbelief at the same time.

このシーンについての質問

How hard is the Dawn Wall compared with other routes?

Much harder overall. It contains more difficult pitches than every other route on El Capitan combined, which is why climbers doubted it could ever be free-climbed in full.

What do climbing grades like 5.13 and 5.14 mean?

They are the difficulty ratings for each pitch. The higher the number, the harder the section, and 5.13 and 5.14 are the levels where only elite climbers operate.

How long did the project take?

Years. They came back every spring and autumn for months at a time, living on the wall, falling, resting and trying again before eventually finding a workable route.

What injuries did they suffer while training?

Kevin sprained an ankle and later hurt his ribs so badly he thought they were broken or dislocated, while rough granite left their feet raw.
