I am an Indian at last.A Passage to India · 1984 — 第 19 / 19 章 · 3'13" · B2
Fresh from his acquittal, Aziz refuses Fielding's plea to waive the damages against Adela. The friend who defended him suddenly stands for all the English: "In the end, you English always stick together." Aziz cuts the tie — "I want to have nothing more to do with any of you."
After his release, Aziz visits Fielding. Fielding is going to England on leave; Aziz will look for a job outside British India. When Fielding mentions the damages Adela owes and asks him to let her off, Aziz refuses: he cannot forgive the letters read in court or his wife's photograph handled at the station, and ends the friendship.

I want to have nothing more to do with any of you.The friendship that held through the trial breaks here, and it breaks over money. Fielding's request is small and reasonable — let Adela off the 20,000 rupees — but it asks Aziz to be generous to the woman who cost him months in prison, his private letters read aloud, and his dead wife's photograph passed around a police station. Aziz knows exactly how the gesture would be read: 'Then, if I agree, the English will be able to say "Here is an Indian that almost behaved like a gentleman."' His fury is not only at Adela but at the pattern: 'In the end, you English always stick together.' Fielding is the one Englishman he trusted, which is precisely why the line lands hardest. The farewell, 'I want to have nothing more to do with any of you,' is Aziz choosing dignity over the friendship, and the film lets him walk away without softening it.

After this morning, she'd nowhere else to go.Fielding explains why he took Adela in: after her testimony she has no place among the English who backed her.
But when she saw she was wrong, she stopped and sent it all to smithereens.Fielding's defence of Adela: she retracted everything and shattered the case, which took a kind of courage.
No. I couldn't possibly get away before the end of next term.Fielding cannot leave India as easily as Adela; his work keeps him there while she goes home.
Then, if I agree, the English will be able to say "Here is an Indian that almost behaved like a gentleman."Aziz's reading of Fielding's request: even his generosity would only flatter the English and be used against him.
He cannot forget what the charge cost him: prison, his private letters read in court, and his dead wife's photograph handled by McBryde. He will not be generous just to please the English.
Bits and pieces. Fielding says Adela 'sent it all to smithereens' — she destroyed the case against Aziz by withdrawing her accusation.
