Aron Meets Two Lost Hikers, Explained

127 Hours · 2010

Chapter 1 of 5 · 3'40"

Aron runs into two hikers who are lost in Blue John Canyon and offers to guide them. "You're lost. I'm a guide," he says, then pitches a shortcut with the promise of the "best time you can have with your clothes on." It plays as flirting and bravado, and it's the last easy conversation before everything goes wrong.

Aron Meets Two Lost Hikers, explained

What happens

In Blue John Canyon, Aron comes across Kristi and Megan, two hikers who have lost their way. He introduces himself, offers to guide them, and takes them on a shortcut he knows instead of the route in their guidebook. They chat, joke and flirt as he leads them through the narrow canyon.

What's really going on

It's the lightest scene in the film, and it only works because Aron is so at home out here. He calls the canyon his second home and jokes that he's "only a psychopath on weekdays," which is how he flirts: confident, a little reckless, always performing. The two women are lost and grateful, and he gets to be the expert for a while. The offer of the shortcut is meant to impress them, not to keep them safe, and he wins them over with a line about the "best time you can have with your clothes on." That confidence is exactly what the canyon will later strip away. Here it's all charm and forward motion; there's no hint yet that being alone with his own judgment is about to become a trap.

Key lines & what they mean

“Guaranteed best time you can have with your clothes on.”
Aron's joke to sell the shortcut: it will be the most fun they can have without taking their clothes off. Confident, flirty and a little reckless.
“I'm only a psychopath on weekdays.”
A deadpan comeback after a creepy joke about a 'child killer look.' Since today is Saturday, he's joking that he is harmless.
“Now all you gotta remember is that everything will be okay.”
A reassuring line as they part or climb: stay calm, it will all work out. In hindsight it lands as the exact opposite of what happens.
“I've always wanted to be a supermodel, but I don't think that's actually really gonna work out, you know.”
A self-deprecating joke about a dream that won't come true, said in answer to someone admitting what they really want to do with their life.

Theme

  • Courage — Aron's confidence and appetite for risk let him charm two strangers into following him off the marked route.
  • Identity — He calls the canyon his second home and presents himself as a guide, defining himself by the place that will trap him.

Questions, then the lines
Who are Kristi and Megan?

Two hikers Aron meets in Blue John Canyon. They are lost and headed for the dome, and he offers to guide them on a shortcut.

Why does Aron take them off the marked route?

He knows the canyon well and wants to show off. The guidebook route is safer, but he prefers the more exciting way and talks them into following him.

What does "with your clothes on" mean here?

It's a joke, not literal. Aron means the route is the most fun experience they can have without taking their clothes off. He's flirting and selling the adventure.

Is Aron actually a guide?

No. He's an engineer who spends his free time in the canyon. He tells them this only after leading them deep in, and says guiding is what he really wants to do.
