「Mike Looks Like a Total Nerd」を読み解く

What's really going on

The introductions sort the room. Trish gets "Bohemian queen" and "the goddess of the scene," with the proof in the next sentence: "Everybody really wants her." The nerd line works the same way. "He looks like a total nerd" is only the setup. He is "one of the most hard-core guys in the scene," and, after "I'll be right back," the next line is "Punk rock!" Mark is called "nothing, really" and "not even a peer." The tribes still love him because he always had pot and acid. Being rich is separate: not because he was a pusher, but from insurance off a family plane crash. "he loved company" is why you sit through some bullshit if you wanted to score. The water bed "doesn't have any waves." He bought black "because it looks cooler." The machine is "Five thousand bucks." He fears "getting ripped off" and yet "ripped things off without shame or guilt." The line calls that chaos "a little tiresome."

Theme

IdentityThe party tour separates posers, a hard-core nerd, a goddess, and a rich outsider every tribe still wants around.
MoneyThe tribes love him because he always had pot and acid. Plane crash insurance explains why he is rich, not why they love him.

発音のポイント

  • a lot of — Keep of small so lot carries the beat.
  • not a fuckin' — Let the t in not slip forward into a.
  • out of his — Let out and of run on together, with no dead stop in the middle.
  • you'd have to — Let the final d in you'd fade before have.
She is the goddess of the scene. Everybody really wants her.

In the introduction, this is Trish's rank at the party: not a vague compliment, because the same line adds that everybody really wants her.

He's not a poser. He looks like a total nerd, right?

He is cleared as not a poser, and the nerd look is the joke. Mike is named right after, as one of the most hard-core guys in the scene.

More stupid than you already are.

A snap during the free drink. Someone just warned that the stuff can make you stupid. This reply claims the stupidity was already there.

The thing was, he liked to buy stuff and show it off.

Said of Mark. The buying is not the habit that matters. He needs the new thing seen, which is what the laser disc, the water bed, and the costly machine are doing.

It was a character flaw, sure, but we all have those.

The narrator lets the showing off go. A character flaw sounds heavy, and the claim that everyone has flaws makes it ordinary, one line before Mark is called intimidating and quick to snap.

Why, he's nothing, really. He's not even a peer.

Mark is shut out of punk and out of equal standing. A peer would be someone in the same circle. Later lines say the tribes love him because he always had pot and acid.

このシーンについての質問

Why is the kid who looks like a total nerd called hard-core?

He says the kid is not a poser, then "He looks like a total nerd." The next line names him Mike. The line after that calls him "one of the most hard-core guys in the scene." He then says to watch and "I'll be right back." The next line is "You see what I mean? Punk rock!" The nerd look is the setup. That hard-core line is the rank.

Why does every tribe like Mark if he is not a punk?

Everybody knew him, and all the tribes love him, because he always had pot and acid. Rich is a different fact: not because he was a pusher, which he really wasn't, but independently wealthy, from the insurance off the crash. Loved company is only why you sit through some bullshit if you wanted to score.

Why show off a water bed that has no waves?

Because the bed is one more thing bought for people to see. Earlier, he liked to buy stuff and show it off. Someone then asks why not buy a normal mattress that doesn't have waves. The reply is still "This one doesn't have waves," and he bought black "because it looks cooler."

Why is he afraid of getting ripped off if he also rips things off?

The lines put both habits in one breath and do not give a motive. He was "always afraid of getting ripped off," yet "he ripped things off without shame or guilt." The next lines call that "Chaos in man" and then only "a little tiresome."
