「Ultrasound Shows the Heartbeat」を読み解く

What's really going on

The room runs on two tracks. One is the chart: a home test, "so here we are," then cervix, uterus, amniotic sac, embryo. The other is clumsy bedside talk. "Hi, there, champ" and "you do look a lot like your sister" sit beside "This is gonna be cold. And you're next," which pulls the second person into the exam. The picture does the telling. "Do you see that flicker?" is answered "that's a heartbeat," then softened to "it looks like you are pregnant," eight or nine weeks, and "Congratulations." "That's it?" meets "Yep," "Take good care of it," and "Now the fun part starts." All the cheer is offered. After "I'll give you a little time alone," what comes out is "Oh, God. Oh, no," answered only by "It's okay." The lines never say why the news lands as "no."

Theme

ParenthoodA flicker on the scan is called a heartbeat, and the pregnancy is set at eight or nine weeks.
Dark humor"Now the fun part starts" and "That'll be fun" are followed by "Oh, God. Oh, no."

発音のポイント

  • supposed to come — Keep to light and slide straight into come.
  • you do look — Put the weight on do, then let like ride out.
  • gonna be cold — Shadow gonna as one short piece, already packed.
  • I'd say — Keep I'd small and put the weight on say.
I took a home pregnancy test, and it said I was pregnant, so here we are.

They have come because a home test already read pregnant, and the line parks them in the room.

Well, you do look a lot like your sister.

Small talk in the exam that insists she really does look like her sister.

This is gonna be cold. And you're next.

Something is about to feel cold, and the other person is told they are part of it.

Do you see that flicker? You know what that is?

A prompt to look at the screen and name the flicker. The following line calls that flicker a heartbeat.

Yeah, it looks like you are pregnant.

A careful yes. "Looks like" keeps the pregnancy as what the picture suggests, just before the week count.

I'll give you a little time alone, there.

The examiner steps back so the two people have the room, immediately before "Oh, God. Oh, no."

このシーンについての質問

Why does this visit end on "Oh, God. Oh, no"?

The lines never give a reason. Those words come after "Congratulations," "Take good care of it," "Now the fun part starts," and "I'll give you a little time alone." The only reply is "It's okay."

Why are they called Mr. and Mrs. Stone?

The line is "what can I help you with today, Mr. and Mrs. Stone?" Earlier, one introduction is "I'm Ben Stone," and Alice is corrected to Allison, Debbie's sister. Nothing here says they are married, and nobody fixes the title.

What are they being shown on the screen?

The tour names "the cervix and the uterus," then "that dark sac" as "the amniotic sac," then "the embryo" in the middle. "Do you see that flicker?" is answered "Yeah, that's a heartbeat."

How many weeks do they get told?

The line is "About eight or nine weeks, I'd say," right after "Yeah, it looks like you are pregnant," and just before "Congratulations." The home test is only the reason they came.

What is "And you're next" doing in the exam?

It is glued to "This is gonna be cold." The cold part is announced, then the other person is included. The scene never shows that second turn.
