The Family Searches for Mirabel, explained

What happens

After the house crumbles, the family scrambles out of the rubble. Julieta tells everyone not to move and rushes to help, Agustín asks if everyone is all right, and Félix realizes the encanto is broken. The powers are gone and the family is shaken, but the real panic begins when they cannot find Mirabel.

What's really going on

The collapse of Casita is the film's lowest point, and the scene is careful to show that the family's first instinct is not grief for the house but fear for the girl. Their powers are gone, yet nobody spends a line mourning them; instead they search and shout, "Mirabel! Where's Mirabel?" That order of priorities is the payoff of everything the film has set up, because the family that spent years measuring Mirabel by whether she had a Gift now realizes she was never the problem. Julieta's instinct is to treat and protect, Agustín asks after everyone, and Félix names the disaster plainly. The miracle is broken, but the love underneath it is not, and the search for Mirabel is what finally puts the family's values in the right order.

Key lines & what they mean

“What do we do now?”
The family's helpless question once the magic and the house are gone and no plan is left.
“What about Antonio? What is he gonna do?”
A worry that turns to the youngest child, whose whole future was tied to the Gift he just lost.
