What's really going on

The practice floor is where the coach is most comfortable: the room goes quiet with a "listen up," the new kid is introduced as someone who'll be around "for a little while," and he's handed off to the older wrestlers rather than coached himself. It's a soft landing, and Kyle doesn't need much of one — he takes his turns and holds his own. The scene's real interest is the conversation after, when the coach tries to find out what he's got. "When's the last time you wrestled?" earns a shrug of an answer, "Couple years ago," and when the coach asks why he stopped, all he gets is "Just felt like it." A kid who won't say more, and a coach already doing the math on what that silence might be worth.
