Ice Missiles Hit the Dawn Wall, Explained

The Dawn Wall · 2017

Chapter 11 of 24 · 3'22"

Ice formed overnight on the top of El Cap, and when the sun reaches it the whole sheet shatters loose and rains down on the camp. "You hear it before you see it," and Tommy barely flinches. Then the film jumps back to Kevin, a bouldering star who cold-emailed a stranger for a chance to climb the wall.

Ice Missiles Hit the Dawn Wall, explained

What happens

Melting ice turns the top of El Cap into a shooting gallery, and the climbers can only listen for what is falling. Tommy shrugs it off. The film then rewinds to Kevin Jorgeson, a Santa Rosa kid who became one of the world's best boulderers and, out of the blue, emailed Tommy asking to be his partner.

What's really going on

The falling ice is the film's reminder that the wall does not care how good you are. The climbers cannot see what is coming, only hear it, and one of them is wearing no helmet. Tommy treats it as normal, which is the point: "Tommy, he was made for something like this." Against that, the film sets Kevin, whose whole reputation was built thirty feet off the ground. "Fiddling around on boulders, that's a far cry from being on El Capitan," he admits, and the gap between the two climbers is the real subject of the chapter. One belongs on the wall; the other has to prove he can stay.

Key lines & what they mean

“You hear it before you see it.”
The falling ice arrives faster than the eye, so sound is the only warning.
“Tommy, he was made for something like this.”
Tommy's calm under a barrage of ice is framed as natural, not brave.
“But for me, it took a long time to get comfortable on the Wall.”
The other climber admits the wall did not come easily to him.
“And to my utter shock, he said, meet me in Yosemite in October.”
Kevin's cold email works: a legend simply tells him to show up.
“I remember standing there with Tommy, who's a legend figure in my life.”
Kevin's awe at his new partner, and the self-doubt that comes with it.
“Fiddling around on boulders, that's a far cry from being on El Capitan.”
The gap between bouldering and big-wall climbing, stated by the newcomer himself.

Theme

  • Courage — Kevin, a boulderer with no big-wall experience, asks a legend for a shot and shows up.
  • Identity — Tommy belongs on the wall while Kevin must prove he is not just a bouldering specialist.

Questions, then the lines
What causes the ice to fall on the climbers?

A windstorm the day before left moisture on the top of El Cap, which froze overnight. When the morning sun hits it, the ice breaks loose and showers down onto the camp.

Why is Tommy not worried about the falling ice?

The film presents him as completely at home on the wall. He has spent much of his adult life on El Capitan, so danger that terrifies others reads to him as routine.

Who is Kevin Jorgeson?

A young climber from Santa Rosa who got into climbing at a gym and became one of the best boulderers in the world. He had never climbed El Cap when he contacted Tommy.

How did Kevin become Tommy's partner?

He had no connection to Tommy at all, but he sent a message out of the blue asking if Tommy needed a partner. To his shock, Tommy told him to meet him in Yosemite in October.
