Chapter 3 of 15 · 2'22"
Fresh out of prison, Billy can't work the manual transmission in the car he has taken, so he makes Layla drive while he lectures her about the Cadillacs he is used to. His explanation of the problem is a masterpiece of understatement: “I cannot drive a shifter car, so we got a little situation here.”
❝ Monologue · 5 lines his luxury-car speech
He repeats luxury and shift themselves until the boast exposes his insecurity.
Hands on the Dashboard
Billy and Layla are in a car he cannot drive: it has a manual shifter and he only knows luxury automatics. He orders her into the driver's seat, boasts about his Cadillac Eldorado, then counts to three and makes her walk around to his door. Later he tells her to pull over, put the car in park, and keep her hands on the dashboard.
Billy has just been released from prison and has nothing, but he cannot admit that, so he turns a broken-down car into a story about status. The shifter he cannot operate is proof of poverty, so he reframes it: “I'm used to luxury cars. Have you ever heard of a luxury car?” Naming the Cadillac Eldorado, insisting his cars 'shift themselves,' he is inventing a life in front of Layla because she is the only audience he has. His control is just as performative — the count to three, the order to keep her hands on the dashboard, the threat to choke her — a man with no power trying to script a woman who has done nothing to him. The comedy and the cruelty sit side by side: he is ridiculous, and she is genuinely trapped.

“I'm used to luxury cars. Have you ever heard of a luxury car?”
The rhetorical question turns a boast into a put-down, propping his ego on the car.
Informal
“When I say three, you follow my count, ...you come around to my door. You got me?”
He turns a simple seat swap into a drill, counting aloud to keep her under control.
Informal
“I cannot drive a shifter car, so we got a little situation here.”
He admits a ridiculous failing in the calmest voice, which makes the threat funnier.
Informal
I'm used to luxury cars. Have you ever heard of a luxury car? You know what luxury means? Have you ever heard of Cadillac? Cadillac Eldorado? That's what I drive. I drive cars that shift themselves. My cars shift themselves. They're luxury cars. They shift themselves.
Up next · 04right off the batThe scene: Billy Asks Layla to Play His WifeHe has just come out of prison with nothing, so he uses the Cadillac to claim a status he does not have. It lets him tell Layla he is someone important.
It has a manual shifter, and he never learned to drive a stick. He says his own cars 'shift themselves,' which is his way of hiding a gap in his skills.
He leaves the car for a minute and does not trust her not to drive off. The order, the sworn threat and the demand that she nod all show how far his control goes.
She mostly does what he says and says very little. Her silence lets Billy keep talking, which makes his bragging and threats look even more unstable.
