The Hot Bath Confession, Explained

All of Us Strangers · 2023

Chapter 7 of 15 · 2'08"

On the surface it's care: someone comes in soaked and feverish, and the other offers to run a bath. Underneath, it's a confession. "Been thinking about you all week, today," one of them admits, then talks about sex, and the other answers with an old fear of dying for wanting anyone at all.

The Hot Bath Confession, explained

What happens

At Adam's flat in London, one of them comes in drenched and shivering with fever, so the other runs a hot bath, joking that nothing a hot bath couldn't solve. Alone together, the talk turns intimate: one admits he's spent all week thinking about the other, while the other confesses an old fear about desire.

What's really going on

The bath is an excuse. Someone is at the door soaked through and burning up, and the offer of hot water lets both of them drop their guard without naming what they want. The real scene is the confession that follows: "Been thinking about you all week, today." The line arrives like a plain fact, then keeps going, from crappy TV and takeaway to sex. What makes it land is the answer it gets. "I thought that if I fucked anybody, I'd die," one of them says, and it reframes the whole exchange: not shyness, not indifference, but a fear learned long before this night. The tenderness is in how the other takes it, no argument, no fix, just "A little." when asked if it's hard to imagine.

Key lines & what they mean

“My nan says there's literally nothing a hot bath couldn't solve.”
A grandmother's old saying offered as gentle care: a hot bath fixes almost anything, so let this warm you up.
“Yes, that's easier said than done.”
A soft pushback: it's easy to say "don't be shy," but actually being unguarded is much harder.
“I thought that if I fucked anybody, I'd die.”
An admission of a long-held fear: for years he avoided sex because he believed desire itself could kill him.
“Been thinking about you all week, today.”
A confession delivered as something ordinary: he has been thinking about him every day, and especially today.

Theme

  • Loneliness — Two neighbours reach for each other partly because being alone has become unbearable; the bath and the confession are company as much as desire.
  • Romance — The whole exchange is a courtship in disguise, running a bath, admitting a week of thinking, and saying out loud what he wants.

Questions, then the lines
Why does he say a hot bath could solve anything?

He's quoting his nan's old saying. He offers it as comfort, half joking, so the soaked and feverish man at the door feels looked after without making a big deal of it.

What does "I thought that if I fucked anybody, I'd die" mean?

It isn't about danger now. Growing up when AIDS made gay desire feel lethal, he believed sex itself would kill him, so he stayed away from it for years.

Do they sleep together in this scene?

No. The talk is honest and charged, but it stays a conversation: a hot bath, a confession, and a fear admitted out loud, and then the scene moves on.

Why does he hesitate to say what he wants?

He does get there, with "Thought about fucking you." The pauses before it, and the way he checks "Are you into that?" and adds "It's okay if you're not," show he doesn't want to pressure an answer.
