Chapter 14 of 16 · 2'48"
Warren arrives at the wedding rehearsal in pain, and Roberta offers him old Percodan left over from her hysterectomy. "I guarantee you, within half an hour, you'll be on cloud nine," she says, and the pills do wonders before the ceremony talk begins.
Roberta Offers Warren Expired Pills
Roberta's Cure for Warren
At the rehearsal for Jeannie and Randall's wedding, Warren is hunched over with back pain. Roberta hands him expired Percodan from her own surgery and promises it will lift him within half an hour. It works: Warren calls it incredible. Roberta then promises a hot tub and a long soak so he will feel good as new.
The scene plays Warren's misery for quiet comedy. He answers "How are we doing?" with "Just dandy," which is the opposite of how he feels, then admits a few Advil might get him through. Roberta's cure is expired Percodan she kept after a hysterectomy, offered with total confidence: "I guarantee you, within half an hour, you'll be on cloud nine." The pills work, and suddenly Warren is chatty and grateful, calling the feeling indescribable. What he never notices is how strange the exchange is. A grieving man is being medicated by a near-stranger who talks about her surgery the way other people discuss the weather, and the rehearsal simply goes on around them.
A1–C2 is the CEFR scale. Cards above the level you pick fade, and playback will not auto-pause on them.

“I know what'll really get you out of the woods.”
The idiom turns recovery into leaving a forest, so relief becomes something you can picture.

“Tomorrow you'll be good as new.”
The promise is short and complete: by tomorrow the damage will be gone.
Neutral
“I had these left over from my hysterectomy.”
She offers surgery leftovers the way others offer food, which is both the joke and the horror.

The scene suggests both. He arrives miserable and barely able to sit, then becomes talkative and calls the feeling incredible. The relief clearly comes from the Percodan, but the warmth and attention also lift him.
She says she will fire up the hot tub so Warren can take a long soak before bed, and promises he will sleep like a baby and be good as new the next day.
He does not explain much. Asked how he is doing, he answers "Just dandy" and mentions that a couple more Advil should do it, letting Roberta take over from there.
