Norma Sends Her Script to DeMille, Explained:sell on something

A caller keeps trying to reach Joe, but Max blocks her with the line that nobody here can give information and the absurd excuse of a stray dog. Meanwhile Norma stakes everything on her astrologer's chart: 'Today is the day of the greatest conjunction.' Joe's warning that scripts don't sell on charts does not move her.

あらすじ

A phone call trying to reach Joe is screened by Max, who insists nobody can give information and passes it off as an inquiry about a stray dog. Norma then sends Max to Paramount to deliver her script to DeMille in person, convinced by her astrologer's chart that this is the day. Joe tells her plainly that scripts do not sell on charts.

「Norma Sends Her Script to DeMille」を読み解く

What's really going on

The scene works by showing how completely Norma's world is sealed. The outside tries to get in — a caller who has 'confirmed the number' and asks for Joe — and Max simply lies, turning a woman into an inquiry about a stray dog. Norma never even suspects, because she is not interested in the outside except as an audience for her return. Her chart is less a belief than a permission slip: 'This is the day,' she says, because she cannot go if the stars have not agreed. Joe's objection, that 'scripts don't sell on astrologer's charts,' is true and useless; she answers that she is selling herself, which is the whole trouble. Later, at the bridge party, her cigarette case is empty and Joe offers one of his — the small kindness is the only currency left.

Theme

DeceptionMax turns an urgent call for Joe into a false story about a stray dog, keeping Norma's world sealed from the outside.
DreamsNorma reads the stars as permission to make her comeback today, betting everything on a chart rather than on the script.

このチャプターで学べること

  • Politeness can carry a refusal better than a raised voice.
  • A star chart is a wish, not a sales strategy.
  • Max's stray-dog line keeps the truth from his mistress.
  • Norma bets her whole self, not just a script.

発音のポイント

  • bother you — Link bother and you so the t almost disappears.
  • not call again — Stress not and call; glide over please.
  • Pull up at — Run pull up at together, with a weak at.
I'm sorry to bother you again, but I've confirmed the number. I must speak to Mr. Gillis.

The caller, insistent and polite, refuses the brush-off: she has checked the number and will not be sent away with a lie.

And you will please not call again!

Max's cold dismissal, closing the door on the outside world and on anyone trying to reach Joe.

Nothing, Madame. Somebody inquiring about a stray dog.

The false story Max invents for Norma, turning a call for Joe into a harmless inquiry about a lost pet.

I hope you realize, Norma, that scripts don't sell on astrologer's charts.

Joe's blunt warning that success will not come from superstition, even if it is wrapped in charts and planets.

I'm not just selling the script. I'm selling me.

Norma's real project: the script is only the vehicle, and what she wants back is herself as a star.

DeMille always said I was his greatest star.

Her proof of worth, drawn from something DeMille said years earlier and still treated as current fact.

But the point is, I never looked better in my life.

Her justification for optimism: she has never been happier, and so she believes she has never looked better.

このシーンについての質問

Who is calling the house, and why does Max hide it?

Someone is trying to reach Joe and has confirmed the number. Max tells her nobody can give information and then tells Norma it was only someone asking about a stray dog.

Why does Norma believe today is the right day?

Her astrologer has read both DeMille's and Norma's horoscopes and found the greatest conjunction. Norma treats the chart as proof that this is the day to send the script.

What does Joe think of the astrologer's chart?

He thinks it is nonsense. He tells Norma plainly that scripts do not sell on astrologer's charts, but she refuses to listen.

What does Norma mean by 'I'm selling me'?

She means the script is not the point. What she is really offering is her own return as a star, and she expects DeMille to want that.

Why is Norma at a bridge party later?

She and Joe go to the house of an old Hollywood figure for bridge, after she has taught him the game, tango steps, and which wine goes with which fish.
