Sir Wilfrid Goes Home, explained

What happens

After a long hospital stay, Sir Wilfrid is driven home by his nurse, Miss Plimsoll, and greeted by his clerks and Carter, his chief clerk. He grumbles about the fuss, brushes off any sentiment, and inspects his chambers, where he finds that everything has been packed away.

What's really going on

Sir Wilfrid's homecoming introduces the film's hero before the drama: a brilliant, impossible old man who cannot bear to be fussed over. The nurse's small tyrannies and his refusal of the welcome party are a running joke, but they also show the energy he has been missing. His chambers have been packed away while he was ill, and he bristles at being treated as finished — he snaps, "Any more sentimentality around here, I shall go back to the hospital!" Then, quieter, he admits, "But I never knew I could miss anything so much." Carter's boast that solicitors are breaking down their doors is both flattery and a careful limit: the great criminal lawyer is offered only civil cases. He is already itching to work again, and the film lets us feel how much the coming trial will mean to him.

Key lines & what they mean

“I'm not a religious man, but when they carted you off, I went out and lit a candle.”
Carter's way of saying he feared for Sir Wilfrid's life, told as a joke about lighting a candle.
“If I'd known how much you talked I'd never have come out of my coma.”
Sir Wilfrid's first volley at his nurse, mock-regret about recovering, which sets their bickering tone.
“But I never knew I could miss anything so much.”
The line under the grouchiness: he loves his chambers, and his gruffness hides how much coming back means.
“Any more sentimentality around here, I shall go back to the hospital!”
His threat to retreat from any display of feeling, a joke that also warns everyone to treat him as normal.

Theme

  • Identity — A famous lawyer is packed away like an old coat and has to prove he is still himself, not a retired man.
  • Pride — Sir Wilfrid refuses the hero's welcome and any sentiment, insisting on returning to work on his own terms.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
Why is Sir Wilfrid so rude to everyone after coming home?

He hates emotional fuss and being treated as fragile after his heart attack. The rudeness is his way of insisting that he is back to his old self and ready to work.

Who is Carter?

Sir Wilfrid's chief clerk, who has kept the chambers running and guarded his wig while he was ill. He greets him warmly and brings him cases to consider.

Why won't Carter give Sir Wilfrid a criminal case?

He says the doctors have forbidden it and offers divorce, tax and insurance work instead. Sir Wilfrid insists those are not worthwhile, which sets up the murder case to come.

Why is the office packed away in mothballs?

While Sir Wilfrid was hospitalized, no one expected him to practise again, so everything was stored. Finding it that way is what stings him and pushes him to demand real work.
