Calloway Tells Anna Harry Is Alive, explained

What happens

Anna is brought to international police headquarters, where Calloway questions her about Lime. He tells her that Harbin's body was in the coffin and that Lime is alive, hidden across the canal in the Russian sector. She says she wishes Harry were dead. Later Martins visits Kurtz and claims he has seen a ghost, demanding to meet Harry.

What's really going on

The scene turns the film's mystery inside out. Calloway has no interest in Anna's forged papers — 'I'm not interested in your forged papers' — because the real question is where Harry is. He reveals that the body in the grave was Harbin and that Lime is alive, then works on her with a small offer of help. Anna's response is not relief but a kind of mercy: 'I wish he was dead,' she says, because then he would be safe from the police. Meanwhile Martins, who has just seen the 'dead man walking,' goes to Kurtz and turns the same shock into theatre, insisting he has seen a ghost and asking whether ghosts only rise at night. The chapter ends with both stories pointed at the same missing man.

Key lines & what they mean

“I don't even know what protocol means.”
Anna's plain reply to rules she cannot follow, and a comic note about being caught between powers whose procedures she never agreed to.
“Listen, I've got to talk to you. I've just seen a dead man walking.”
Martins' breathless news, phrased like a ghost story: the man he saw buried has just walked past him alive.
“I want the truth, Miss Schmidt. We know he's alive.”
Calloway's leverage line: he no longer needs her to talk, because he already knows the secret, and he wants her to confirm it.
“I wish he was dead.”
Anna's strange mercy: death would put Harry out of reach of the police, so she wishes for the simpler grief over the dangerous truth.
“I've seen a ghost. You tell Harry I want to see him.”
Martins uses the ghost as both an accusation and a summons, demanding Harry face him after faking his own death.
“Or do ghosts only rise by night, Dr Winkel?”
A taunt aimed at the doctor: Martins suggests the conspirators are putting on a supernatural show, and he is not impressed.

Theme

  • Deception — The fake death is exposed: Harbin lies in Lime's grave, and the man everyone buried is alive and hiding across the canal.
  • Friendship — Anna's loyalty shows in her wish that Harry were dead, which would at least keep him beyond the reach of the police.

Ideas clave

Lo que te llevas
  1. A plain 'I don't know what it means' can disarm official talk.
  2. Naming a ghost turns fear into a challenge.
  3. May as well is resignation, not enthusiasm.
  4. Wish with a past tense means the opposite is true.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
Why does Calloway question Anna?

Because the police know Lime is alive and believe Anna may know where he is hiding. They hope she will trade information for help with her forged papers.

Why was Harbin's body in Lime's coffin?

Because Lime faked his death. Harbin was buried under Lime's name so that Lime could disappear, which is why the police say another man was buried in his place.

Why does Anna say she wishes Harry were dead?

Because then he would be safe from the police and no longer hunted. The wish is not cruelty but a kind of protection for a man she still loves.

What does 'a dead man walking' mean?

It means someone who is alive but expected to die, or in this case a man thought dead who has appeared alive. Martins uses it after seeing Harry apparently risen.

Why does Martins go to Kurtz?

Because he wants to reach Harry. After seeing the supposedly dead man, he tells Kurtz he has seen a ghost and demands that Harry come to meet him.
