Yas Tries to Stop Dom's Summit, explained

What happens

Walking to the restaurant, Dom explains that his ex and Eric have invited him to clear the air, and that Eric will be there too. Yas is appalled and tells him to text and cancel. He says he needs to take some responsibility; she says he is rolling over. He refuses to bring her in with him, and they part with jokes.

What's really going on

The scene is the film's clearest statement of what Dom's break-up has done to him. His ex and Eric have chosen the restaurant that used to be "our" place, and Dom still calls going there something he "needs to do." Yas hears it all and calls it wild, then turns serious: "You're gonna let them off the hook after how they treated you?" Her insult, that he is "rolling over like a bitch," is meant to sting him into standing up for himself, and it does sting. When he declines her offer to come in, he draws the line between a fun afternoon and "a proper, actual life thing." The parting joke, "good luck with not being a YouTube sensation," keeps the tone light, but Yas is also saying she hopes he gets a real life.

Key lines & what they mean

“- [child] Yeah, like this. - You're preaching to the choir, babe.”
Yas agrees with Dom so completely that telling her about it is pointless: she already loves Greggs too.
“You're gonna let them off the hook after how they treated you?”
Yas's challenge: after being hurt, Dom is about to forgive them and let them escape any blame.
“Today's pretty much the first time I've been out the house in three months.”
Dom admits how far he has withdrawn since the break-up, which is why the meeting worries Yas.
“Hey, good luck with not being a YouTube sensation.”
Yas's dry goodbye, wishing him well in the ordinary life he says he wants.

Theme

  • Heartbreak — Dom is still in the middle of a break-up, treating a meal with his ex and her new partner as something he owes them.
  • Friendship — Yas, a stranger, argues harder for Dom's dignity than he does himself, and he still will not let her in.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
Why is Dom going to the restaurant at all?

He says he has to take some responsibility for what happened, and he treats the meeting as part of the process of getting over the break-up.

Why does Yas call it a summit of doom?

Dom's ex and Eric want to clear the air together, and the meeting is at the restaurant that used to be his and Gia's. Yas finds the whole idea absurd and painful.

Why does Yas want to come with him?

She offers to drink caipirinhas with him and show the others he does not care. She thinks a friendly face would help him get through the meal.

Why does Dom refuse to let Yas come inside?

He calls it a proper, actual life thing and does not want to bring a person he has just met into such a personal moment, even though it offends her.

What does "off the hook" mean?

It means free from blame or responsibility. Yas asks whether Dom is going to let his ex and Eric escape the consequences of how they treated him.
