Atlas Shrugged: Part I · 2011

Capítulo 12 de 16 · 2'50"

Dagny tells James the railroad is finished and lays out her own plan: leave Taggart Transcontinental, take the Rio Norte Line, and name it "The John Galt Line." What looks like a business rescue is a family break — she warns him, "if you double-cross me in any way," and makes him clear the government off her back.

Dagny Names the John Galt Line, explained

What happens

Eddie tells Dagny that more men have quit and that Taggart Transcontinental's stock is collapsing after the State Science Institute denounced Rearden Metal. Dagny goes to James and announces she is taking a leave, forming her own company, and taking over the Rio Norte Line herself. She names it the John Galt Line.

What's really going on

The scene is a takeover disguised as a resignation. Dagny is not quitting; she is carving the only valuable part of the railroad out from under her brother and running it herself. James can only reach for the family name — "You're not dragging the family name through this" — while Dagny answers with a name that turns the family business into a question no one can answer: "The John Galt Line." Her conditions make the power shift explicit: she takes Eddie, the one man she needs, and tells James to "keep your cronies in Washington off my back." The warning that ends the scene, that she has never hurt anyone "but if you double-cross me in any way," shows how little trust is left between them. It is a sibling scene fought entirely in the language of business.

Key lines & what they mean

“I think it's time to stand on our own.”
Dagny's decision to act without waiting for help: the company must survive on its own work rather than on favors.
“In order to save my family's business...”
The paradox she states outright: to rescue the family railroad, she has to take part of it away from the family.
“We can't stop and we can't go on.”
Her description of a company trapped: standing still loses money and moving forward is impossible under the current rules.
“Now we know why you've gone off the rails.”
James's insult, using the railway image: her plan proves to him that she has lost her judgement.
“Second, keep your cronies in Washington off my back.”
One of her two conditions: James must stop his political friends from obstructing her, a demand that admits how much the railroad runs on influence.
“I have never done anything to hurt a living creature in my entire life.”
Her warning before the threat: she claims a clean record, which makes the coming 'if' sound like a promise.
“But if you double-cross me in any way...”
The unfinished threat: she will not be betrayed, and the sentence stops precisely where the consequence would begin.

Theme

  • Power — Dagny takes the railroad's best asset and its best man, dictating terms to James rather than asking for approval.
  • Family conflict — Siblings fight over the family business, with the family name used as a weapon and trust already gone.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
Why does Dagny take a leave from the railroad?

She wants to rebuild the Rio Norte Line herself, free of the board and her brother's control. By taking a leave and forming her own company, she can act quickly and take the blame if she fails — "I go down alone."

Why does Dagny name the new line the John Galt Line?

It is the phrase people use when they cannot explain why things fall apart — "Who is John Galt?" Naming the line after it is a provocation, and James takes it as proof that she has gone off the rails.

What does "off the rails" mean?

It means behaving wildly or losing control, and here it is also a pun on the railway setting. James uses it to say Dagny's plan proves she has lost her judgement.

Why does Dagny demand that James keep his cronies off her back?

She knows the project depends on government permissions, grants, and authorizations. She wants James to stop his political friends from obstructing her — and the demand shows how much the railroad depends on influence.

Why does Dagny threaten James at the end?

She says she has never hurt anyone, then leaves the warning unfinished: if he double-crosses her, something will follow. It shows there is no trust left between them.
