Kitty Confronts Puss, explained

What happens

Goldilocks leaves the bears, though they still vow to help her get her wish. Kitty, meanwhile, realizes she was played again and tells Puss he is the same old cat. He admits he is down to his last life, and when someone begs Jack Horner for help, Jack is too busy to care.

What's really going on

The scene pairs a breakup with a confession. Goldilocks tells the bears she is not one of them and leaves, but their love does not harden; they keep offering to get her the wish anyway. The harder blow lands between Kitty and Puss. She has just realized, "I can't believe I fell for it again," and what she wanted all along was simple: "Someone, anyone I could trust." Puss's answer, that he is down to his last life, is the first honest thing he offers her, but it arrives too late, and she hears the old pride in it, "Still the same old Puss in Boots." By the time Jack Horner shrugs off a plea for help, the film has shown two ways of being unable to love: running away, and being too busy.
