Underground, Puss meets his nine former lives, who greet him as one of the gang and talk about how they were once larger than life, inviting him to become a legend again. Elsewhere, the bear family argues over the captive dog and invokes their no crime-backs rule. Puss, however, wants to get back to Dog and Kitty.
The scene is a temptation in two directions. Puss's former lives offer him the flattering version of himself: famous, fearless, larger than life, and above the people who now matter to him. Their pitch is simple - "You got the map. You don't need them" - but the film lets us hear how hollow it is, since the whole journey has been about whether he can trust someone again. Meanwhile the bears, a found family of outlaws, argue and insult each other with real affection; their rule against changing the deal is a joke, but it also shows what a real bond looks like. Perrito, the orphan, quietly points out that Goldi has what he never did: a family. Puss has to choose between the legend he was and the friends he has.
