What happens
At Mama Luna's, a dog dressed as a cat admits the truth and asks Puss to keep it secret, saying he needs the friends and the food. Puss tells him he wants to be left alone. Meanwhile Goldilocks and the bears raid the cat hideout hunting for Puss, and Baby Bear is ordered to sniff him out.
What's really going on
The scene works because the two animals want opposite things. The dog has spent his life being seen as the wrong species and just needs one place where he is accepted; his plea, "Please don't tell anyone. I need this," is almost painfully sincere. Puss, by contrast, wants only to be left alone and refuses to take on anyone else's problem.
