Sidney Handcuffs Clifford, explained

What happens

Sidney keeps Clifford a little longer to talk about Houdini and his plans for a play. He brings out a pair of Houdini's own handcuffs and invites Clifford to try them on. Myra, suspicious of Sidney's motives, tries to pull him aside, but the cuffs are already locked and the key is nowhere.

What's really going on

A playwright who has lost his touch is showing a younger, better writer a pair of unescapable handcuffs, and the scene lets the prop do the talking. Sidney's interest in Houdini is real, but his timing is not idle: he keeps Clifford engaged, waves off Myra's alarm as a bad memory, and gets the young man to put the cuffs on himself. Myra says it outright, 'I don't even believe what you're thinking.' The old plagiarism story he tells Clifford is a cover, and the missing key is the punchline. What Myra fears and what the audience suspects arrive together.

Key lines & what they mean

“Who knows, I might hit a snag. It's happened before.”
Sidney raises the possibility that he might need help again, keeping the door open for Clifford even as he insists he is fine.
“I don't even believe what you're thinking. Can I talk to you?”
Myra names Sidney's plan without naming it and asks for a private word, the last attempt to stop what is happening.
“They really seem like very solid, escape-proof cuffs.”
Clifford's innocent compliment describes exactly the danger he is standing in: cuffs that cannot be escaped.
“In reality, Houdini 's life was extraordinarily dramatic.”
Sidney's line about the real Houdini doubles as a wink about the scene, where an ordinary evening turns dramatic.
“Though, I doubt that I shall, this time.”
Sidney says he probably won't get stuck again, a polite refusal of help that hides his real motive.

Theme

  • Deception — A friendly demonstration of a collector's prize becomes a trap, and the missing key turns hospitality into a threat.
  • Betrayal — Sidney uses Clifford's trust and Myra's loyalty alike, playing host while setting up the young writer.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
What is Sidney's plan with the handcuffs?

He uses Houdini's handcuffs to get Clifford helpless, then pretends he cannot find the key. The friendly demonstration is the first step of an attack.

Why is Myra so alarmed?

She has worked out what Sidney is doing. She interrupts, asks to speak with him alone, and says, 'I don't even believe what you're thinking.'

Does Clifford suspect anything?

No. He admires the cuffs, agrees to try them on, jokes that he is not Houdini, and has no idea the key will not turn up.

What does Sidney say about the earlier plagiarism trouble?

He tells Clifford they once had a nasty experience with a plagiaristic playwright, and uses Myra's old fear to explain away her behavior.
