Clifford Turns the Gun on Sidney, explained

What happens

Clifford reveals he is alive and in control, and Sidney finally admits the money: with the insurance and what Myra left, he will have around a million dollars and the house. He explains his cover story, then fires at Clifford — and the gun only clicks.

What's really going on

The scene pays off the whole film's machinery. Sidney believes he has staged everything, and the money speech is his victory lap: insurance, the house, a future hit. Clifford's answer is blunt, 'You'll never get away with this,' and Sidney's 'Why not?' is the sound of a man who thinks his own plot is airtight. Then the gun clicks. The claim that he needed the bullets for another gun turns the earlier murder scene into a rehearsal for this one, and the line 'Reversal, Sidney. Remember?' names what the audience has just watched. Two writers, each sure he is the one holding the pen.

Key lines & what they mean

“You have got a very firm grip on unreality, Sid.”
Clifford's diagnosis of Sidney's confidence: he is holding tightly to a version of events that is not true.
“46 years old, you're written out, you're practically broke.”
Clifford sums up Sidney's real position, taking apart the fantasy of success and money.
“-You shit! You'll never get away with this. -Why not?”
The angry exchange that sets up the twist, with Sidney's calm 'Why not?' showing how sure he is.
“Sorry the click is so anticlimactic, but I needed the bullets from that gun...”
Clifford's cool explanation for the empty gun, revealing that he emptied it in advance for his own weapon.

Theme

  • Deception — Sidney's whole cover is a performance, and the reversal shows the story belonged to Clifford all along.
  • Betrayal — Each man used the other and then planned to discard him, and the scene settles who was actually in control.

  3. Money explains the motive before the violence does.
  4. One cool question can take the power back.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
How much money does Sidney end up with?

Around a million dollars, counting the insurance and what Myra left him, plus the valuable house. He says he hopes to add another hit play to that.

Why does Sidney's gun only click?

Because Clifford had already taken the bullets out of it, to load his own gun. The kill Sidney planned was reversed before it could happen.

What does Clifford mean by 'Reversal, Sidney'?

He means the roles have flipped: the man who thought he was in control is now the one being held at gunpoint.

Was Myra part of Sidney's plan all along?

Sidney's talk of the insurance and what Myra left, together with the money figure, shows he was counting on her death, which reframes the whole scheme.
