Kurt's record-setting season ends one yard short: Tampa Bay wins the Arena Bowl. Afterward a Rams man offers him a tryout — 'We want you to come and try out for us' — while in the Rams' meeting room the coaches argue over whether an arena-league quarterback is worth a shot.
The Barnstormers Lose on the One-Yard Line
The Rams Offer Kurt a Tryout
The Rams Coaches Debate Signing Kurt
After four months and sixteen games, the Arena Bowl comes down to one yard, and the Barnstormers can't get in — Tampa Bay wins. Kurt takes the loss hard, and a man from the Rams named David Gillis approaches him about a tryout. In the Rams' meeting room, the coaches disagree: some call Kurt old and slow, while Dick Vermeil argues for him.
The loss is the setup for the offer. Kurt plays the best game of his arena career — a record twenty-sixth completion — and still loses, which is exactly the audition the Rams are watching. He answers the praise with 'Well, thank you, but it didn't help us win,' and 'I hate it for the team,' telling you where his head is. The Rams' debate is the real tension: one side only sees the league — 'It's arena football,' 'You think that'll translate?' — and the other sees the man. 'Character translates anywhere, Mike,' is the line that decides it, and it echoes when someone says the knock on Kurt ('Slow as molasses,' 'beneath the standards') is the same one once aimed at Dick: 'That's what people said about me when I came here.'

A man who introduces himself as David Gillis and says he is 'with the Rams.' He has been trying to reach Kurt, whose calls he had been putting off.
Some think an arena-league quarterback won't translate to the NFL — too old and slow — while Dick Vermeil calls it a hunch and says 'character translates anywhere.'
It's a jibe at Kurt's speed: molasses pours very slowly, so the line means he's painfully slow — one of the reasons the coaches doubt him.
Not on-screen. The doubters insist 'there is no way this guy makes the team,' but Vermeil's support keeps the tryout alive, and the scene cuts away.
