Chapter 1 of 16 · 5'00"
A chaotic morning at the Eatenton house — boys shooting at birds, a wedding car to decorate — gives way to Truvy's salon, where a nervous young applicant named Annelle is quietly hired. Truvy's verdict: 'you've just landed yourself a job.'
M'Lynn Loses Her Patience
Truvy Hires Annelle on the Spot
At the Eatenton house, M'Lynn's morning is chaos: her sons are shooting at birds and her other boy plans to decorate the wedding car with condoms. Later, at Truvy's beauty salon, a nervous young woman named Annelle applies for work, shows a good hand with hair, and is hired on the spot.
The chapter works by contrast. The Eatenton house is all noise and appetite: sons blasting at migrating birds, a brother planning a crude joke for the wedding car, and M'Lynn shouting into the chaos — 'It's like talking to a brick wall.' Nobody there is wicked, but nobody is listening either, and the wedding has become a machine that runs on everyone's temper. Then the film cuts to Truvy's salon, and the temperature changes. Annelle, anxious and half-finished, gets to do the thing she is good at, and Truvy sizes her up in one warm, businesslike sentence: 'You've just landed yourself a job.' It is the first real kindness in the film, offered as employment rather than charity, and it quietly sets the salon up as the place where these women will actually look after each other.
A1–C2 is the CEFR scale. Cards above the level you pick fade, and playback will not auto-pause on them.

Up next · 02talk some trashThe scene: Truvy Hires AnnelleBecause she can see that Annelle is good at the work. She notes her technique is really good and that her form and content will improve with time.
She trained at a trade school, where she says she was number one in frosting and streaking, and she does her own hair.
Wedding chaos. The sons are shooting at birds that keep dirtying the cars, and one of the boys plans to decorate the wedding getaway car with condoms.
It means saying something that no one listens to. M'Lynn uses it when her sons ignore her orders completely.
Truvy tells her there is no time for thanks, warns that they will be busier than a one-armed paper hanger, and starts showing her the work.
