Walter and Phyllis Fear Keyes
❝ Monologue · 20 lines Lola Recalls the Night Her Mother Died
Walter Neff and Phyllis meet in secret and realize the murder has pulled them apart. Days later, Lola Dietrichson comes to Neff's office to talk about her father's death. She recounts a night six years ago when her mother lay sick, the nurse was missing, and a single look told her something terrible had happened.
The first half is the aftermath the lovers never planned for. Phyllis wants to wait for the scandal to die down; Walter knows Keyes, who, 'once he gets his teeth into something, he never lets go.' The real confession, though, is Walter's: 'But not of Keyes. I'm afraid of us. We're not the same anymore.' They committed murder to be together and now can barely stand each other. Then Lola arrives to reopen an older wound. Her account of the nurse standing in the doorway with a look she can't forget is her way of accusing Phyllis of killing her mother too. Walter, the guilty man, is now the one who must calm the accuser and keep the story from spreading, all while realizing that the woman he killed for may be a serial poisoner. 'She's not going to get away with it this time,' Lola insists, and Walter has every reason to fear she's right.

Look at me, Mr. Neff. I'm not crazy. I'm not hysterical. I'm not even crying. But I have the awful feeling that something is wrong... and I had that same feeling once before, when my mother died. When your mother died? We were at Lake Arrowhead. That was six years ago. We had a cabin there. It was winter and very cold. My mother was very sick with pneumonia. She had a nurse with her. There were just the three of us in the cabin. One night I got up and went into my mother's room. She was delirious with fever. All the bed covers were on the floor and the windows were wide open. The nurse wasn't in the room. I ran and covered my mother up as quickly as I could. Just then I heard a door open behind me. The nurse stood there. She didn't say a word, but there was a look in her eyes... I'll never forget. Two days later, my mother was dead.
