Rick Holds Renault at Gunpoint, Explained

Casablanca · 1943

Chapter 20 of 20 · 3'07"

On the surface it's the arrest of Victor Laszlo going wrong. Underneath, it's Rick deciding the ending himself: he turns a gun on Renault and makes him call the airport. Renault, even at gunpoint, gets the last word — "That is my least vulnerable spot."

Rick Holds Renault at Gunpoint, explained

What happens

At the airport, Renault tries to arrest Victor Laszlo for accessory to murder, and Strasser is on his way. Rick pulls a gun, forces Renault to sit down, and makes him phone the airport to clear two letters of transit. Even held at gunpoint, Renault keeps joking.

What's really going on

The airport is where Rick finally chooses instead of reacting. He has the letters, he could leave, and instead he turns the gun on his old friend and makes the exit happen on his terms. Renault's line — "That is my least vulnerable spot." — is more than a joke; it's a signal that he's already decided which way the wind is blowing. The scene also hands the film its real question: not who gets the girl, but who gets to decide what happens to the people who can't decide for themselves.

Key lines & what they mean

“That is my least vulnerable spot.”
Renault's comeback while a gun is aimed at his chest. It's the film's driest joke, and it also tells Rick that Renault isn't really fighting him.
“Love, it seems, has triumphed over virtue. Thank--”
Renault pretending to be shocked that Rick would betray him for a woman. He's putting on a show for Strasser's benefit — and he never finishes the sentence, because Rick cuts him off.
“We'll tell him at the airport. The less time to think, the easier.”
Rick's reasoning for keeping Victor in the dark until the last moment: the less Victor has time to refuse or interfere, the more likely the plan goes through.
“Not so fast, Louis. Nobody is going to be arrested. Not for a while yet.”
Rick taking control of the scene: he stops the arrest in its tracks and tells Renault, in plain terms, that the plan has changed. 'Not for a while yet' leaves the rest open.

Theme

  • Duty — Rick gives up the woman he loves and the escape he planned, choosing what the moment demands over what he wants.
  • Friendship — The ending turns on Rick and Renault: the cynic who blows with the wind finally picks a side, and the two walk off together.

Questions, then the lines
Why does Rick hold Renault at gunpoint?

To stop Victor's arrest and force Renault to phone the airport and clear the letters of transit. It's the only way to get Victor and Ilsa out before Strasser arrives.

Why does Renault help Rick in the end?

Partly because Rick has a gun on him, and partly because he's already sensed which way things are going. He blows with the wind, and by the airport the wind has shifted.

What does 'That is my least vulnerable spot' mean?

Renault is joking that the heart a gun is aimed at is the one place he can't be hurt — a way of saying he has no heart to lose. It's bravado, and also an offer of peace.

Why doesn't Rick tell Victor he's staying behind?

Rick wants no argument before it's too late. He plans to break the news at the airport so Victor has less time to think and less chance to refuse the letters.

Does Strasser catch them at the airport?

He orders a police squad to the airport, but Rick's gun and Renault's phone call have already done their work. Strasser arrives too late to stop the plane from being cleared.
