Chapter 11 of 19 · 4'17"
On a dangerous night leg, Leo keeps filming instead of racing. Michael finally asks, "The phone or the race?" The team is hours behind, Chiki's knee is failing, and a stray dog they fed days ago has somehow followed them through the jungle.
❝ Monologue · 6 lines Michael Confronts Leo Over the Race
A Stray Dog Follows the Team
During a nighttime trek, Michael warns the team to keep a sharp eye for crocodiles and snakes. Leo keeps filming everything, and the others are losing patience. Michael asks him to choose between the phone and the race. Meanwhile the team is hours behind, Chiki has hurt his knee, and a stray dog begins following them.
The scene is where the team's two ideas of the race finally collide. Leo treats the journey as content — he films instead of moving — while Michael measures everything in time and position. The question "The phone or the race?" is blunt, and Leo's answer, "The phone is the race," reveals that they are not even arguing about the same thing. The fight quickly becomes personal: Michael's honesty about the sponsorship is thrown back at him, and someone points out that Chiki, injured, could still "run circles around" the others. What gives the argument its weight is the setting; snakes are real, the knee is real, and the delay is real. The stray dog that appears near the end quietly introduces the film's other heart: something that keeps following Michael no matter how far behind he is.

“Go home. You're gonna die out here.”
Telling the stray to leave, the harsh words carry real worry.

“We're already hours behind, Chik has got one good leg, and you're worried about a stupid dog.”
Stacking three hard facts makes Leo's misplaced worry sound absurd.

“Who begged me to be on their team because they couldn't get a sponsor?”
A question that settles the fight with facts: who begged to be on my team when no sponsor would take them?
Informal
Who begged me to be on their team because they couldn't get a sponsor? No Leo, no money. Remember? I told you what you wanted to hear to get you out here. I don't give a shit about the sponsors. You're here now. What are you gonna do? You gonna go home? Go home. Walk!

They feel he hid how unprepared they were and pushed them into a race they cannot win. Leo also exposes that Michael told him what he wanted to hear to get him to join.
Michael gave it meatballs days earlier, and the dog has tracked them a long way through the jungle. It looks beaten, and Michael cannot bring himself to leave it behind.
He twisted his knee in the mud and is running on one good leg. The injury slows the team and becomes a central reason the others blame Michael for the lack of training.
