Michael Refuses the Cargo Cage, explained

What happens

At the airport, the airline gives Michael a choice: Arthur rides in the cargo cage, or he does not fly. Michael refuses, saying the dog is terrified of enclosed spaces and would not survive the trip. He kneels down, promises to be waiting when Arthur lands, and tells him to be strong. After the flight, a vet takes over.

What's really going on

The scene takes the film's theme to its hardest test. Everything Michael has done was for the race, but here the rules demand he treat the dog as luggage, and the airline's line is flat: "The dog either gets inside the cage, or he's not getting on the plane." Michael will not accept it, because he knows Arthur's history — the dog was beaten and cannot bear being shut in. His answer is not anger but care: "I'm not gonna let him die alone," and then a series of promises — that he will be there, that Arthur should be strong one more time. The reunion pays it off; Arthur comes off the plane alive, and a vet takes over. The last beat turns the emotion warm again: the family jokes about another mouth to feed, and the mouth turns out to be a baby.

Key lines & what they mean

“In the cage, or he doesn't fly.”
The airline's blunt rule: unless Arthur is crated as cargo, he cannot board the plane at all.
“I'm not gonna let him die alone.”
Michael's reason for refusing the flight; he fears the cargo hold would kill the dog he has come to love.
“We have another mouth to feed.”
A joke about the dog that doubles as the reveal of a pregnancy; the family is growing in more ways than one.
“The dog either gets inside the cage, or he's not getting on the plane.”
The official version of the rule, repeated coldly, leaving Michael no room to negotiate.

Theme

  • Duty — Michael refuses to treat a living animal as cargo, choosing responsibility for Arthur over an easier trip home.
  • Friendship — The promises before the flight and the reunion after it show a bond strong enough to survive being separated.

Questions, then the lines
Why won't Michael put Arthur in the cage?

Arthur was beaten and is terrified of being shut in. Michael knows the flight's cargo hold could kill a dog in his condition, so he refuses to let Arthur travel that way.

What happens to Arthur after the flight?

He survives and is taken to a vet, Susan, who takes over his care. The team comes to see him, and Michael keeps the promise he made before the flight.

Why does the family joke about another mouth to feed?

It first sounds like a joke about the dog, since they now have to pay for Arthur. Then it is revealed that Michael's wife is pregnant, so the phrase is literally true.

What good news does Michael come home to?

His wife tells him she is pregnant and had been saving the news in case he needed something good after the race. It arrives right after Arthur's survival.
