Carolyn Confronts Lester, explained

What happens

Carolyn walks into the bedroom, catches Lester in a private moment, and demands an explanation. He refuses to apologize and jokes about it instead. The argument becomes a verdict on their dead marriage; she threatens divorce, and he calmly tells her to turn the light off. Later, a newly energized Lester goes jogging and tells his neighbors he wants to look good naked.

What's really going on

The fight isn't really about what happened in the bedroom. When Lester says "This hasn't been a marriage for years," he is stating out loud what both of them have known for a decade. Carolyn's threat to "divorce you so fast it'll make your head spin" is less a plan than a last grab at control. Lester has already left the marriage emotionally: he answers "On what grounds?" and then, instead of escalating, tells her to turn off the light. Nobody wins, because neither of them is still fighting for the relationship. His decision to start jogging is the real response. He has stopped arguing with Carolyn and started changing himself, and the 'new me' he announced moments earlier no longer sounds like a joke.

Key lines & what they mean

“This hasn't been a marriage for years.”
Lester says the marriage died long ago; he's not angry, just stating what both of them already know.
“It's a great thing when you realize you still have the ability to surprise yourself.”
Lester's voiceover: rediscovering something you can do, or want, feels like waking up after years of numbness.
“I want to look good naked.”
Lester's blunt answer about his fitness goal; beneath the joke is a man who wants to feel desirable again.
“I will divorce you so fast it'll make your head spin!”
Carolyn's threat: she'll move so quickly the decision will leave him dizzy and unable to react.

Questions, then the lines
Why does Lester just admit he was masturbating?

He's done hiding. Instead of apologizing, he treats it as proof he's still alive and still wants things, which is exactly what Carolyn can't stand.

Why is Carolyn so quick to threaten divorce?

She has no real leverage left. The threat is meant to shock him back into line, but Lester's calm reply shows it doesn't work.

What does "On what grounds?" tell us about Lester?

He's almost amused. Asking for her legal reasons means he's already detached from the marriage and isn't afraid of the threat.

Who ends the bedroom fight, and how?

Lester does. He stops arguing and simply tells Carolyn to turn off the light, leaving her standing there with nothing to answer.

Why does Lester start jogging right after this?

It's his first step toward changing his life. The fight freed him from pretending, and the jog is him acting on the 'new me' he just announced.
