The Séance at Windward House, Explained

The Uninvited · 1944

Capítulo 19 de 28 · 4'02"

Stella asks whether the spirit is her mother, and the answer comes back kind — but the séance does not stay genteel. She slips into a trance, begins shouting in Spanish, and the room turns cold as the candles gutter. "I saw this happen once before at a séance," Dr. Scott says. "I thought it was a fake."

The Séance at Windward House, explained

What happens

At Windward House the family holds a séance. Everyone puts a finger on an upturned glass while Stella asks the questions. The glass answers that it guards her, and then something changes: Stella speaks in a trance, shouting warnings in Spanish. The room fills with the scent of mimosa, turns suddenly cold, and the candles flare. Dr. Scott recognizes the state from a séance he once saw.

What's really going on

The séance gives Stella exactly what she came for: proof, in her own hearing, that her mother is near. The glass spells out "I guard", and she softens — "Is that why you stay here, just to be near me?" But the moment she gets her answer, she stops being the one in control. The voice that speaks through her turns hostile and foreign, and the room answers with cold, scent, and light. Dr. Scott, the rational man, is the one who names it: "I saw this happen once before at a séance. I thought it was a fake." Now he believes. Roderick's order not to move until Stella is "over the worst of this" keeps the scene still while everything else is moving, and the last line — something coming toward them — turns a family experiment into the thing the whole film has been promising.

Key lines & what they mean

“The important thing is that we should all believe.”
The group's working rule for the séance: belief is treated as the thing that makes contact possible, not doubt.
“Is that why you stay here, just to be near me?”
Stella's question to the spirit, and her wish: she wants her mother's presence to be for her, not the house.
“No. Don't move until she's over the worst of this.”
Roderick's order to hold still while Stella is in the trance, treating her state as an illness to be survived.
“I saw this happen once before at a séance. I thought it was a fake.”
Dr. Scott's admission that he has seen this before and dismissed it; now he cannot call it fake.

Theme

  • Faith — The séance only works if everyone believes; as soon as the answer is cruel rather than comforting, belief becomes dangerous.
  • Death & grief — Stella finally reaches her dead mother and refuses to let the contact be taken from her.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
What does the glass spell out?

It answers Stella's questions and spells a word, "I guard", and later the name "Carmel". Stella takes the answers as coming from her mother.

Why does Stella go into a trance?

While asking the spirit questions, she slips into a trance and starts shouting in Spanish, warning the others not to believe what they hear. The film presents it as genuine, not faked.

What happens to the room during the séance?

It fills with the scent of mimosa, turns suddenly cold, and the candles flare. Roderick also senses another presence besides the one speaking through Stella.

What does Dr. Scott mean about the séance he saw before?

He says he once saw someone enter a trance at a séance and assumed it was a trick. Here, he says, it is not a fake — and dangerous.

Why won't Roderick let anyone move?

He wants Stella to come out of the trance safely, so he orders everyone to stay still until she is over the worst of it. Pamela is stopped from answering the door.
