The Plan to Contact Mary Meredith
The Séance They Plan for Stella
Stella is close to a breakdown, and Dr. Scott admits a country doctor cannot do much for her. Pamela suggests holding a séance to get a message from Stella's mother, Mary Meredith, and even writes the comforting words in advance. Rick scoffs at the idea, but they finally agree: the séance will take place at Windward House, with Stella present and the others watching her all the time.
The plan is dishonest, and everyone in the room knows it. Pamela wants to calm Stella, and the only comfort the girl will accept is a word from her mother, so the answer is to invent one: the séance is staged, the message is written in advance, and Rick's job is to move the glass. He argues that he will not cheat Stella, and is answered with the reason the cheat is worth it — "Crikey, no! I want to set Stella's mind at rest. She's just about torn in two." What makes the scene strange rather than cynical is that Mary Meredith may genuinely be present. The script they prepare says she has found peace and that Stella should stay away from Windward House; but they are writing instructions for a ghost they cannot see, and the house may not follow the script.

He's got a passion for hard-boiled eggs. Did you know? And turnip tops. I don't think he has any idea he's a dog. Not really. Of course, he thinks he has a rather odd figure for a man. I didn't question him very closely about where he belonged. I was afraid I might find out. I'm sorry now.

Because the haunting belongs to that house. They also know it is dangerous for Stella there, so they agree that they will stay with her the whole time.
