Roderick needs information and Lizzie has it, so he presses her for the past. She takes offence, calls the séance board a heathen device, and threatens to leave the house for good. Yet she is the one who names the nurse who was present when Mrs. Meredith died — Miss Holloway, now running a retreat on Bodmin Moor.
Lizzie Gives Up the Nurse's Name
Roderick and Pamela question Lizzie about Windward's history. She resents being used as a source, mocks the séance board as a device for calling up devils, and threatens to move out. But she knows the village stories, and she supplies the key name: the trained nurse present when Mrs. Meredith died was Miss Holloway, now running a retreat on Bodmin Moor.
The scene is a small comedy with a sharp edge: the household needs the one person it has been treating as a servant. Lizzie knows exactly how much she is worth, and she makes them pay for it — she refuses to be "bluffed", calls the séance tools devilish, and issues her mangled "ultimato". Then she opens the village's memory and hands over the most useful fact in the film so far: the name of the nurse, Miss Holloway. Roderick's line, "Lizzie Flynn, you're a gold mine," is affectionate and a little patronising at once; he recognises her value only when she is being useful. Her information moves the plot toward the Retreat on Bodmin Moor, and it also shows that the ordinary servant knows more than the genteel family that employs her.

“I will not stay in a house where it goes on, and that is an "ultimato"!”
The threat to leave lands hard, while her mangled ultimatum keeps it human.

“I don't know. Everybody seems to be dead.”
A flat joke about a dead end captures the frustration of chasing an old case.
