Capítulo 11 de 19 · 2'19"
A caller keeps trying to reach Joe, but Max blocks her with the line that nobody here can give information and the absurd excuse of a stray dog. Meanwhile Norma stakes everything on her astrologer's chart: 'Today is the day of the greatest conjunction.' Joe's warning that scripts don't sell on charts does not move her.
Max Screens a Call for Joe
❝ Monólogo · 5 frases Norma's astrology speech
She stacks chart, signs and conjunction until superstition sounds like faith.
A phone call trying to reach Joe is screened by Max, who insists nobody can give information and passes it off as an inquiry about a stray dog. Norma then sends Max to Paramount to deliver her script to DeMille in person, convinced by her astrologer's chart that this is the day. Joe tells her plainly that scripts do not sell on charts.
The scene works by showing how completely Norma's world is sealed. The outside tries to get in — a caller who has 'confirmed the number' and asks for Joe — and Max simply lies, turning a woman into an inquiry about a stray dog. Norma never even suspects, because she is not interested in the outside except as an audience for her return. Her chart is less a belief than a permission slip: 'This is the day,' she says, because she cannot go if the stars have not agreed. Joe's objection, that 'scripts don't sell on astrologer's charts,' is true and useless; she answers that she is selling herself, which is the whole trouble. Later, at the bridge party, her cigarette case is empty and Joe offers one of his — the small kindness is the only currency left.

“And you will please not call again!”
A please wedged into a command makes the snub colder, not gentler.

“Nothing, Madame. Somebody inquiring about a stray dog.”
A calm little lie turns a woman asking for Joe into a lost-dog errand.

“I hope you realize, Norma, that scripts don't sell on astrologer's charts.”
The plainest truth wrapped in courtesy: charts do not sell scripts.

The past tense always said holds a vanished glory she still hears as now.

“But the point is, I never looked better in my life.”
With the point is she pivots from facts to her mirror, and means it.

Yes, I am. This is the day. Here's the chart from my astrologer. She read DeMille's horoscope. She read mine. - Did she read the script? - DeMille is Leo. I'm Scorpio. Mars has been transiting Jupiter for weeks. Today is the day of the greatest conjunction.
Siguiente · 12write on specLa escena: Betty Asks Joe to Write With HerSomeone is trying to reach Joe and has confirmed the number. Max tells her nobody can give information and then tells Norma it was only someone asking about a stray dog.
Her astrologer has read both DeMille's and Norma's horoscopes and found the greatest conjunction. Norma treats the chart as proof that this is the day to send the script.
He thinks it is nonsense. He tells Norma plainly that scripts do not sell on astrologer's charts, but she refuses to listen.
She means the script is not the point. What she is really offering is her own return as a star, and she expects DeMille to want that.
She and Joe go to the house of an old Hollywood figure for bridge, after she has taught him the game, tango steps, and which wine goes with which fish.
