Capítulo 7 de 16 · 3'33"
At Rearden's anniversary party, Lillian plays hostess, greeting guests with red-carpet chatter and steering James Taggart toward her husband for business. Rearden is forced to socialise, and when Francisco D'Anconia appears he snaps: "Okay, what the hell is he doing here?"
Lillian Works the Anniversary Party
Rearden Confronts Lillian About Francisco
The Reardens host an anniversary party, and Lillian works the room while Hank would rather not be there. She introduces James Taggart to him as a business contact and shows off a bracelet made from his new metal, mocking it as a gift. When Francisco D'Anconia arrives, Rearden is furious and demands to know why he came.
The party is a battlefield dressed as a celebration. Lillian is the one in control, and every line she speaks does two things at once: she scolds her husband for not being sociable, then uses the same social grace to push James Taggart at him and to show off the bracelet made of his metal. When she calls it a gift and adds, 'He tries, poor thing,' the compliment is an insult. Rearden, who hates these evenings, is left with only sarcasm — 'How could I possibly have more fun than this?' — and the one guest he cannot bear is Francisco. His question, 'what the hell is he doing here?', is the only honest thing said all night. The scene sets up the marriage as a performance in which each half scores points off the other.

It is a fashion-party question asking which designer made your outfit. Lillian uses it to greet Dagny, showing how at home she is in this world.
There is bad history between them. Rearden demands to know why Francisco is at his party and tells Lillian to keep him away, which she brushes off.
She is playing hostess and matchmaking for business: she steers James, Dagny's brother, toward Hank and presents him as a man who wants to meet him.
It shows Lillian's attitude to her husband's achievement: she wears his metal but dismisses it with a barb — 'He tries, poor thing' — turning a gift into a slight.
