Tony Wilson Meets Sir Keith Joseph, Explained

24 Hour Party People · 2002

Capítulo 6 de 10 · 4'36"

The film pauses for Tony Wilson's own version of events: Manchester as the 'centre of the universe,' then the trip to London where he planned to be 'nice as pie' to Sir Keith Joseph and make him 'fall apart.' Instead the minister tells him: 'You don't know what you are.'

Tony Wilson Meets Sir Keith Joseph, explained

What happens

Tony Wilson narrates his version of Manchester's rise, then the Factory office scene: he calls himself 'the big guy,' and a friend deadpans 'the big boss.' He also describes his trip to meet Sir Keith Joseph, where he meant to be charming, and reports the minister's verdict on him. The staff then inspect Factory's expensive new MDF office.

What's really going on

The scene is a lecture on timing disguised as a story. Tony Wilson preaches that 'when we built the Hacienda, it was too soon' and 'when we built the Factory office, it was too late,' then shows the result: an office made of MDF that cost thirty grand. The same joke runs through his London trip. He plans to be 'nice as pie' to Sir Keith Joseph and make him 'fall apart,' but the minister turns the tables with 'You don't know what you are.' Wilson's whole style is here: he narrates his own failure as if it were a triumph, and the film lets him, because the charm is the point.

Key lines & what they mean

“Anyway, it was meant to be. Comes the hour, comes the man.”
Tony's fatalism: the moment arrives and the right person appears for it. He frames his own career as destiny rather than luck or hustle.
“When we built the Hacienda, it was too soon.”
Part of his lesson on timing: the club opened before the culture was ready to fill it, so even a good idea can miss its moment.
“You don't know what you are.”
The minister's blunt verdict, the one line Tony can't answer. It's aimed less at his job than at his whole self-invention.
“It's like listening to a fucking headache.”
Tony's description of a bad phone call: noise that hurts rather than communicates. It's his gift for the vivid, throwaway simile.

Theme

  • Identity — The minister's 'You don't know what you are' cuts to the film's recurring question of who Tony Wilson really is.
  • Ambition — Factory's rise and its too-early club and too-late office show ambition outrunning its moment.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
Why does Tony Wilson call himself 'the big guy'?

It's a joke with the room. When asked who he is, he says he's the big guy; a friend undercuts him with 'he's the big boss,' and he adds, 'metaphorically speaking.'

Why does Tony want to meet Sir Keith Joseph?

He says he drove to London planning to charm the minister and bring down the government — an absurdly grand ambition for a TV presenter with a mobile phone.

Who tells Tony 'You don't know what you are'?

Sir Keith Joseph, the minister he came to confront. The line lands because Tony, who narrates everything, has no comeback, and later admits it stuck.

Why does Factory's new office cost so much?

Because, as Tony insists, you aren't paying for materials, the office is made of MDF, but for design. Hooky keeps asking the price anyway, and it comes out at thirty grand.
