John Shows Up at Marietta's Opening, explained

What happens

Marietta's gallery opening is interrupted when her husband, John, walks in and asks her to start over. She refuses, telling him he never understood her and that she is now a different woman living with two men. Meanwhile, Melodie finally tells Boris that she has fallen in love with someone else.

What's really going on

The chapter is full of returns that do not work. John comes back expecting the woman he left, and Marietta's answer is the plainest line in the film: "I'm a different woman, John." She has built a new life out of the very things he ignored, and she is not interested in being forgiven. The scene's comedy comes from everyone talking past each other, including Boris, who turns the reunion into a lecture about ancient Egyptians. Then the other return lands: Melodie tells Boris she has fallen in love with someone else, and his reaction is barely a reaction at all. The two endings are set side by side, and neither of them goes the way the person asking wanted.

Key lines & what they mean

“John Celestine! Look what the cat dragged in.”
Marietta's mocking greeting, turning a husband's return into a joke at his expense.
“I'm a different woman, John.”
Her flat answer to his plea, the line that closes the door on the old marriage.
“Your vision never extended beyond the backyard.”
Her summary of the marriage: he never looked beyond his own small world.
“What the hell does it all mean now? Zilch.”
Boris's verdict on history and meaning, delivered as commentary while others argue.
“Yes, it's true. I have been very patient with your phenomenal ignorance.”
Boris's backhanded compliment to Melodie, praise shaped like an insult.

Theme

  • Identity — Marietta has remade herself and refuses to be returned to the role John remembers her in.
  • Family conflict — A husband asks for his family back at the worst possible moment, and gets a flat refusal instead.
