Melodie's Father Shows Up, explained

What happens

Melodie and Boris are about to leave for Marietta's gallery opening when a stranger knocks: it is Melodie's father John, who has tracked her down at last. He assumed she had been kidnapped and taken as someone's bride; instead she is married to Boris. He wants to see Marietta and beg her forgiveness.

What's really going on

For a man who missed his daughter, John arrives with a story he prefers to the facts. He swears he searched everywhere — "We even called the FBI!" — but he decided Melodie's letters were written "at gunpoint" rather than accept that she left willingly. Wrapped in religious language ("Lord, I've sinned! Please forgive me"), he kneels and prays while Melodie tells him point-blank, "there's nobody out there." Boris serves as the audience's acid: "Why do all the religious psychotics wind up praying at my doorstep?" The reunion is less about Melodie than about John's need to be forgiven and to reclaim Marietta, and he leaves the door declaring he wants to see her anyway.

Key lines & what they mean

“You were chloroformed by polygamous Mormons.”
John's absurd theory of what happened to Melodie: he convinces himself she was drugged and dragged off to be a polygamist's bride.
“I made a terrible mistake, I committed the sin of self-indulgence.”
John's confession about betraying Marietta: he frames his affair as a moral failing, a sin, rather than a choice.
“I see death by culture shock.”
Boris's deadpan prediction about John, who cannot cope with how much his wife and daughter have changed.
“Why do all the religious psychotics wind up praying at my doorstep?”
Boris's exasperated summary of the scene: John's prayer at his door is just the latest bout of religious mania to land on him.
“Melody will tell you I don't need my shotgun to be a whole passel of trouble.”
John's warning to Boris: he is dangerous enough without a weapon, and he intends to get his way about seeing Marietta.

Theme
