Shelby Reveals Her Dialysis, explained

What happens

At the salon, Ouiser complains about healthy food while Shelby arrives with her hair cut short. The women notice the marks on her arms and learn she has been on dialysis: her kidneys were ruined by having a child. She tells them her mother will donate a kidney, and that they check into the hospital the next morning.

What's really going on

The chapter is where the film's comedy and its grief finally lock together. Before the reveal, the salon is doing what it always does — Ouiser ranting about vegetables, Clairee needling her, everyone talking over everyone. Then Shelby rolls up her sleeves, and the marks change the room. What makes the scene remarkable is that Shelby refuses to be tragic about it. She rattles off the medical facts as if they were errands — the dialysis, the ruined kidneys, the transplant — and sums it up with 'Mama's going to give me one of her kidneys,' as casually as if she were borrowing a dress. The women follow her lead, moving from shock into jokes about organs in beer coolers. Only later, alone with Clairee, does the truth of it surface in someone else: Ouiser confesses she feels like 'a terrible person' for having joked about being better off dead, and Clairee's answer — that Ouiser would give her own dog a kidney — is the film in one line.

Key lines & what they mean

“We're supposed to wear funny-looking hats and ugly clothes and grow vegetables in the dirt.”
Ouiser's account of what an old Southern woman is meant to do, which she offers as an explanation and a complaint at once.
“I try not to eat healthy food if I can possibly help it.”
Her cheerful declaration of bad habits, the joke that sets up everything else she says.
“Mama's going to give me one of her kidneys.”
Shelby's calm announcement of the transplant, delivered as a fact rather than a plea for sympathy.
“It looks like you've been driving nails up your arms.”
The blunt reaction to Shelby's dialysis marks, the shock spoken aloud before anyone can soften it.

Theme

  • Family love — M'Lynn will give her daughter a kidney, a matter-of-fact act of love that Shelby announces without drama.
  • Survival — Shelby treats dialysis and transplant as practical problems to solve, refusing to let illness define how she is treated.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
What is wrong with Shelby?

Her kidneys were ruined by having a child, and she is now on dialysis. The marks on her arms come from the treatment.

Who is giving Shelby a kidney?

Her mother, M'Lynn. Shelby announces it plainly, saying Mama's going to give her one of her kidneys, and they check into the hospital the next morning.

How does Shelby treat her illness?

As a practical problem. She calls it no big thing, explains that her kidneys are kaput, and moves straight to the transplant and her nails.

Why does Ouiser feel bad afterward?

Because she had joked at the salon about being better off when her body wears out, and she realizes it was said in front of Shelby, who is seriously ill.

How does Clairee comfort Ouiser?

She tells her nobody pays attention to her, and then that she would give her own dog a kidney if he needed one — a way of saying she is kind, whatever she says.
