Ouiser Proves She Is Pleasant
At the salon, Truvy hosts a wedding shower for Shelby with a monster motif, and the women open the gifts. Clairee recognises Ouiser's handwriting and teases her about it, then the two argue about art and culture. The chapter ends at Shelby's home, where something is suddenly wrong with her.
The chapter is built as a joke that gradually stops being funny. Most of it is the wedding shower at its most chaotic: gifts, gossip, Ouiser's handwriting compared to a killer's, and then the long argument about art in which Ouiser refuses, line by line, to see plays, movies, or books. Everything she says is a punchline, and Clairee's patient summary — that Ouiser would be more pleasant if she occupied her time — only makes her sharper; 'I am pleasant!' she insists. Yet the scene tips without warning. After the women leave, the film cuts to Halloween at home, where Shelby is dressing her son for trick-or-treating and then, in a handful of ordinary words, something goes wrong — 'What's the matter?' and her name, called over and over. The comedy does not prepare us for it, which is the point: the film lets the laughter run as long as it can, then simply takes Shelby away.
