Truvy Hires Annelle, explained

What happens

At the Eatenton house, M'Lynn's morning is chaos: her sons are shooting at birds and her other boy plans to decorate the wedding car with condoms. Later, at Truvy's beauty salon, a nervous young woman named Annelle applies for work, shows a good hand with hair, and is hired on the spot.

What's really going on

The chapter works by contrast. The Eatenton house is all noise and appetite: sons blasting at migrating birds, a brother planning a crude joke for the wedding car, and M'Lynn shouting into the chaos — 'It's like talking to a brick wall.' Nobody there is wicked, but nobody is listening either, and the wedding has become a machine that runs on everyone's temper. Then the film cuts to Truvy's salon, and the temperature changes. Annelle, anxious and half-finished, gets to do the thing she is good at, and Truvy sizes her up in one warm, businesslike sentence: 'You've just landed yourself a job.' It is the first real kindness in the film, offered as employment rather than charity, and it quietly sets the salon up as the place where these women will actually look after each other.

Key lines & what they mean

“So, best I can tell, young lady, you've just landed yourself a job.”
Truvy's verdict after watching Annelle work: the interview was never formal, just a judgement of skill, and Annelle passes it.
“It's like talking to a brick wall.”
M'Lynn's exasperation with her sons, who hear nothing she says — the chapter's running joke about family chaos.
“We'll be busier than a one-armed paper hanger.”
Truvy's comic prediction for the day, a reminder that the salon is a business as well as a refuge.
“Stop that now! I can't hear myself think!”
M'Lynn's shouted plea over the noise of the house, the sound of a home that will not settle down.

Theme

  • Family love — The Eatenton household is loud and harried, yet its chaos comes from ordinary family life surrounding a wedding.
  • Friendship — Truvy offers Annelle a job rather than pity, quietly making the salon a place of mutual care.
