Giulia Shows Luca the Stars, Explained

Luca · 2021

Capítulo 7 de 9 · 3'28"

One kid quizzes the other about what he'd do after winning, then the talk turns personal: half the year she's a stranger here, and locals treat her like she doesn't fit. "You know those aren't fish, right?" goes one line, just before a telescope turns the sky into something neither of them fully understands.

Giulia Shows Luca the Stars, explained

What happens

On a hillside before the race, Giulia and Luca trade plans for what winning would mean. Giulia admits she only summers in Portorosso and is seen as an outsider, then shows Luca a telescope, walking him through stars, Saturn and the solar system until he's hooked on the sky.

What's really going on

This looks like two kids killing time before a race, but it's really two lonely people finding each other. Giulia has spent her whole life shuttling between Genova and a town that treats her as an outsider, so the Cup matters less as a trophy than as proof she was right to keep coming back. Luca hears his own secret life in her story, which is why he says, "I think I know how you feel." Her telescope then does something the race can't: it makes her curiosity feel like a gift she can hand over. When she asks, "Sorry. Too much?" twice, she's testing whether he'll flinch at her intensity. His answer, "Never," is the whole friendship in one word. Then Alberto arrives, and the evening quietly ends.

Key lines & what they mean

“The universe is literally yours!”
As she hands over the astronomy book, her line is playful and generous: the knowledge she just shared now belongs to Luca.
“Only a galaxy full of solar systems.”
Her deadpan answer to what's beyond the solar system; the scale keeps opening up until it becomes a joke they share.
“And every summer, I come here, and everyone thinks I'm just some weird kid who doesn't belong.”
Her confession: the place she loves treats her as an outsider, which is why the race is personal.
“I'll get up in front of everyone and say, "Told you I'd win!"”
Luca's imagined victory speech; he doesn't want a prize, he wants to be seen and proven right.

Theme

  • Coming of age — A girl and a boy compare futures, and a telescope turns a small-town summer into a first taste of how big the world is.
  • Friendship — Two outsiders recognize the same loneliness in each other and trade the one thing they can offer: attention.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
Why doesn't Giulia feel like she belongs in Portorosso?

She spends most of the year in Genova with her mamma and only comes back each summer, where the locals treat her as a strange kid rather than one of their own.

What does "too much" mean when she says "Sorry. Too much?"

Not literally "a lot." It means she thinks her personality or enthusiasm is overwhelming, so she checks whether she's being tiresome before opening up further.

Why does Giulia show Luca the telescope?

She's sharing the one thing that makes a summer among strangers bearable. Her excitement about Saturn and the solar system is also an invitation: this is who she is, if he wants to know her.

Why does Alberto interrupt them?

He's been looking for Luca and pulls him away right as the conversation deepens, cutting the evening short and hinting at a pull between the two friendships.

Where does Luca get the astronomy book?

It's around the telescope; he asks to borrow it for the night, and instead the answer back is simply, "You can have it" — a gift rather than a loan.
